BNSF Railway invites energetic engineering students to join the Summer Intern program on the Engineering Roadway Equipment Team in Fort Worth, TX. This immersive program prepares you for the Management Trainee Program, with field training, vendor coordination, and exposure to SAP-based asset tracking.

Qualifications

  • Pursuing a Bachelor’s or Graduate degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
  • GPA of 2.75 or higher.
  • Willingness to relocate and travel up to 75% during summer.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in equipment shipping and ensure shipping information is accurate.
  • Support equipment retirements and ensure proper reporting.
  • Participate in scheduling and planning meetings in the Brainerd Roadway Equipment Shop.
  • Vet regional turnovers and ensure accurate reporting for information transfers.
  • Update SAP to reflect equipment assignments and locations.
  • Coordinate with customers to assign ramp and rider cars correctly in the EDO system.
  • Spend significant time in the field inspecting equipment and identifying replacement opportunities.
  • Work in a safety-sensitive environment with varying weather and noise conditions.

As aSummer Intern on the Engineering Roadway Equipment Team, you will work alongside experienced professionals on important projects that enhance the performance of our machinery. You will engage in field operations to see engineering principles in action and develop skills in equipment management and operational planning. This program is designed for ambitious students who are eager to tackle real-world engineering challenges and contribute to the complex and fascinating field of railway maintenance machinery and technology. You'll enhance your technical skills and gain invaluable insight into the operations of one of North America's leading railroad companies through this immersive experience. Ultimately, our Summer Internship Program aims to recruit students into our Management Trainee Program, offering a direct pathway to join us after graduation.

This is a full-time(minimum 40hrs/wk)position in a 24x7 operations environment, subject to on-call, overtime, nights, alternatingshifts, weekends, and holidays.

Travel and Relocation is required for the summer. Candidates must be flexible with their location (as they could be moved depending on business needs), must have reliable transportation to and from work and travel up to 75% of the time.

Training will start with a two-day orientation in Fort Worth, Texas, offering a company overview and networking with leaders, followed by support on ongoing projects and practical field training at an assigned location.

Key Responsibilities

Assist Planned Maintenance Coordinator Equipment Planning with new equipment shipping. Working with vendors and internal BNSF contacts to ensure equipment is ready to ship and all shipping information is correct.

Assist Planned Maintenance Coordinator Equipment Planning and field personnel with equipment retirements. Ensuring reporting is correct and requirements have been reached before activating retirement process.

Participate in Brainerd Roadway Equipment Shop scheduling and planning meetings. Challenge the status quo and look for opportunities to accelerate the current processes in place.

Assist in vetting Regional System Gang turnovers and assignment changes. Ensuring correct reporting is vital for success and fluid transfer of information to all stake holders.

Work with mentor to update SAP to accurately reflect equipment assignments and locations as needed.

Work with customers to ensure ramp and rider cars are assigned to the correct pool utilizing BNSF EDO, an engineering system used to track and assign rail cars.

Extensive time spent in the field inspecting equipment and determining opportunities for replacement/rebuild equipment to ensure reliable equipment for our customers.

Daily work is conducted in an indoor/outdoor safety sensitive environment where the working conditions can include diverse and extreme weather conditions (hot, cold, rain, snow, and sleet), walking and performing work on uneven surfaces, working around loud noises, fumes, and heavy/moving machinery.

Basic Qualifications
  • Legally authorized to work in the United States and will be at least eighteen (18) years old upon hire.
  • Does not require BNSF's assistance, now or in the future, (whether monetary, through sponsorship, or otherwise) to obtain, maintain, or extend employment authorization (including H-1B, STEM OPT/CPT, or TN nonimmigrant status).
  • Capable of working in a 24/7 environment, including nights, weekends, and holidays, and can safely perform duties outdoors in all weather conditions or in a shop, terminal, or field environment. Role includes climbing ladders and navigating uneven surfaces, with the ability to travel up to 75% of the time based on business needs.
  • Able and willing to relocate anywhere on the BNSF Railway operating system (western 28 states) upon hire, for the summer, and travel to other locations as required. If you have any location restrictions, please answer "No."
  • Pursuing a Bachelors or Graduate degree in Mechanical Engineering (including Controls Systems Engineering, Electrical Systems Engineering, Robotics and Anonymous Systems Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, and Transportation Systems Engineering) OR a similar degree program from an accredited university.
  • Have and will maintain at least a 2.75 cumulative GPA.
  • Have LESS THAN three (3) years of professional work experience/military service, EXCLUDING internships, part-time jobs, or positions held while pursuing my undergraduate and/or graduate degree.
  • Have access to reliable transportation for the duration of the internship to and from assigned BNSF location.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior internship experience or less than 3 years of work experience in Engineering, Supply Chain, Business, Construction, Logistics, or a related field.
  • Have or have held a leadership position in a campus, community, or extracurricular organization.
