Job summary

Flintco, LLC in Houston is seeking an Engineering Manager to oversee defined portions of a project, maintain accurate client-facing documents, and manage the flow of information from drawings to master schedules and submittals.

The role collaborates with the Superintendent to plan upcoming work, obtain and expedite delivery of equipment and materials, and support the Project Manager in monitoring progress and performance across the project.

Summary
Job Summary

The Engineering Manager is responsible for a defined portion of a project, and there may be more than one Engineering Manager assigned to a project. The Engineering Manager is accountable for establishing effective working relationship with client representation and managing the flow of routine information and documents with them. The Engineering Manager maintains up-to-date and accurate documents for the project, including drawings, plans, master schedule as-builts, submittals, logs, test results, etc. The Engineering Manager works closely with the Superintendent to plan and coordinate upcoming work. The Engineering Manager obtains, tracks, and expedites the delivery of equipment and materials to the site. The Engineering Manager also assists the Project Manager in monitoring the status of the project and identifying efforts to more effectively manage the project.

The Engineering Manager may be assigned duties and responsibilities explicitly depicted in the descriptions of other Company position titles (e.g., Project Manager, Superintendent) as required by the existence of certain circumstances (e.g., size and complexity of the project, availability of personnel, etc.).

Safe, Effective and Efficient Operation of the Project
  • Managing Safety
  • Knows, practices, and enforces the Company safety policies and procedures.
  • Proactively motivates trade involvement in advocating project safety. Works to visibly create safe operations as a top priority at the project level. Visible as leader in safety in field.
  • Knows, practices, and enforces the Company substance abuse program.
  • Ensures compliance to the Company’s substance abuse program.
  • Follows through on reasonable suspicion and the enforcement of the substance abuse program.
  • Advises field personnel on potential risks of planned activities, e.g., crane load lift limits. Calls the Safety Department for additional expertise as needed.
  • Leads and/or participates in safety meetings, as assigned by the Project Manager.
  • Contributes to building a safe project site.
  • Obtains safety equipment needed by personnel on the project site.
  • Conducts safety inspections of the project site.
  • Points out potentially unsafe conditions to the Superintendent and/or subcontractor.
  • Informs the Project Manager of patterns of unsafe conditions.
  • Takes appropriate action when adequate safety precautions have not been taken.
  • Completes accident investigations and reports as directed by the Project Manager.
  • Documents safety violations.
Project Planning
  • Maintains a master schedule of activity for the project.
  • Obtains and understands the master schedule for the project. If necessary, creates the master schedule to meet the client’s timelines and the construction approach decided by the Project Manager.
  • Maintains the master schedule, keeping it current with changes in the project.
  • Accurately reports progress based upon the master schedule.
  • Keeps the Project Manager informed of changes in the critical path. Supplies current copies of the schedule to the Superintendent, subcontractors and others as directed by the Project Manger.
Project Start-Up
  • Assists the Project Manager in setting up the office on the project site.
  • Fulfills survey responsibilities as assigned.
  • Establishes accounts with local suppliers, as directed.
  • Develops and manages adequate commissioning & start-up plans.
  • Managing Quality
  • Monitors the quality of materials used in the project as well as the quality of construction and keeps the Project Manager informed.
  • Conducts visual inspection of the project on a regular basis, looking for deviations from accepted construction practices and aspects of the project that will not be satisfactory to the client.
  • Reviews the reports from all testing agencies and keeps the Project Manager apprised of the results. Promptly notifies the Project Manager of out-of-range results.
  • Coordinates inspections with local regulatory bodies. Accompanies inspectors as required. Reviews the results of the inspection and keeps the Project Manager apprised of the results.
  • Verifies conformance to specification of key materials and equipment used on the project.
  • Verifies quantities of key materials (loads of sand, yards of concrete) used in the construction of the project.
  • Manages the punch list process, which could include:
  • Working to avoid the necessity of a punch list;
  • Developing a punch list; or
  • Responding to one developed by the client or A/E.
  • Complies with the Company’s quality management procedures.
  • Assists the Project Manager in running a smooth and coordinated project.
  • Understands the Project Manager’s plan, methods and means for constructing the project. Makes input and suggestions for improvement to the Project Manager.
  • Based on the schedule and direction from the Project Manger, anticipates work to be done during the next week. Obtains materials and supplies needed to implement the schedule.
  • Attends and participates in the daily project meeting.
  • Teams effectively with the Superintendent(s) on the project. Provides information. Raises questions. Responds to questions. Assists in solving problems and coordinating upcoming activities.
  • As assigned by the Project Manager, keeps a daily log of key activities and decisions for the project.
  • Keeps the Project Manager informed of progress, key events, potential problems, and exceptions to the norm.
Documenting
  • Maintains up-to-date and accurate documents for the project.
  • Obtains and safely keeps a master copy of the documents for the project.
  • Becomes the expert on the documents for the project; knows the documents better than anyone else assigned to the project.
  • Obtains and verifies all shop drawings as assigned.
  • Prepares and submits requests for information to the client’s agents.
  • Prepares and submits specifications of materials and/or equipment used (i.e., submittals) to the client/client’s agent for approval.
  • Maintains an up-to-date and accurate set of documents that records the project as it was constructed (i.e., as-builts). Submits the as-builts to the client/client’s agent upon completion of the project.
  • Maintains proper safety records.
  • Maintains quality management documentation as required.
Coordinating Support Functions
  • Coordinates activities on the project site with support functions.
  • Requests and returns equipment to the Warehouse.
  • Requests steel from the Fabrication Shop.
  • Submits documentation to develop and support invoices to the client.
  • Responds to inquiries and requests for information from the home office.
