Job description

Join the Future of Commerce with Whatnot!

Whatnot is the largest livestream shopping platform in North America and Europe, where sellers buy, sell, and discover a wide range of products—from trading cards and fashion to electronics and live plants. We build live commerce at a scale that has never been done in the West, shaping a new industry with raw, innovative playbooks.

Our remote, co‑located teams are anchored in hubs across the US, UK, Ireland, Poland, Germany, and Australia. We move fast, stay close to users, and focus on high‑impact work.

Whatnot is one of the fastest growing marketplaces and was recently named #1 Best Startup Employer in America by Forbes. Follow our news and engineering blogs to learn how we empower passion into business and unite people through commerce.

Role

The Seller Growth Engineering team helps new sellers succeed—from application to first livestream to building thriving businesses. Within Seller Growth, the Seller Lifecycle Growth/Enterprise team builds systems that provide every seller with knowledge, guidance, and confidence to activate, grow, and scale.

As Engineering Manager for Seller Lifecycle Growth/Enterprise, you will lead a team that builds Whatnot’s seller onboarding and education platform, owning systems that identify seller potential early and power differentiated onboarding and education experiences based on predicted long‑term value. You partner closely with Product, Design, Data Science, and Marketing to craft personalized educational experiences throughout the seller journey and define the technical strategy for coaching sellers to success.

This unique opportunity involves building both customer‑facing experiences and the underlying content systems, tooling, and platform capabilities that enable consistent, voice‑aligned seller education across product and internal teams.

Responsibilities
  • Hire, develop, and grow a high‑performing team of engineers across backend, web, and mobile.
  • Partner closely with Product and Design to define the long‑term vision for seller education and the technical investments needed to support it.
  • Drive platform investments that enable contextual delivery of educational content throughout the seller experience, rather than standalone documentation.
  • Build and own experimentation, measurement frameworks, and goals around seller education impacting seller activation, engagement, retention, and business growth.
  • Plan and execute ambitious cross‑functional projects while coordinating dependencies across Engineering, Marketing, and international product teams.
  • Foster a strong engineering culture centered around ownership, technical excellence, and rapid iteration.

We offer flexibility to work from home or from one of our global office hubs, and we value in‑person time for planning, problem‑solving, and connection. Team members in this role must live within commuting distance of our New York or San Francisco hub.

You

People who excel at Whatnot thrive on figuring things out as they go, are action‑oriented, deeply curious, and care more about outcomes than credit. They stay close to the product and the people using it.

In addition to embodying our cultural principles, great leadership candidates will also have:

  • Experience leading engineering teams, supporting career development while delivering results in a high‑growth environment.
  • A low ego, builder mindset, and sound judgment when making difficult trade‑offs with limited resources.
  • Proven ability to recruit, mentor, retain, and develop high‑performing engineering teams.
  • Hands‑on technical leadership experience building and operating large‑scale distributed systems and complex web and mobile applications.
  • Strong product and design instincts, with an understanding of how user experience and technical architecture work together to deliver great products.
  • Comfortable making pragmatic decisions around technical debt and balancing short‑term execution with long‑term maintainability.
  • Experience defining and leveraging product metrics, with a strong understanding of both the value and limitations of data.
  • Ability to effectively manage stakeholders, navigate competing priorities, and operate successfully in ambiguous environments.
  • Significant hands‑on engineering experience in the domain you’ll be leading, enabling credibility with technical teams.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent practical experience.
Benefits
  • Flexible Time‑off Policy and company‑wide holidays (including spring and winter break)
  • Health insurance options including medical, dental, vision
  • Work‑from‑home support
    • Home office setup allowance
    • Monthly allowance for cellphone and internet
  • Care benefits
    • Monthly allowance for wellness
    • Annual allowance towards childcare
    • Lifetime benefit for family planning, such as adoption or fertility expenses
  • Retirement; 401k offering for traditional and Roth accounts in the US (employer match up to 4% of base salary) and pension plans internationally
  • Monthly allowance to dog‑food the app
    • All Whatnot employees are expected to develop a deep understanding of the product. We encourage developers to use Whatnot as both a buyer and a seller as part of their job; the dog‑food budget makes this fun and easy.
  • Parental leave
    • 16 weeks of paid parental leave + one month gradual return to work; company leave allowances run concurrently with country leave requirements and take precedence.
