Job description

Overview

Hi I’m Colin, Director of Engineering, Europe. We’re looking for an engineering manager to help us build a different type of engineering team and culture at Ashby. Engineers will write product specs, participate in product decisions, and own projects with less reliance on breaking work into many tickets.

What we’re aiming for

We want to move away from heavy processes that limit ownership and throughput. Our approach values engineers taking ownership of problems and driving them to completion, with an optimistic mindset about what engineers can own and achieve.

Role focus

You’ll focus on building your team, their skills to thrive with ownership, and an environment that enables them to do their best work consistently with minimal distraction. For junior engineering managers we try to keep within six direct reports to allow time observing, correcting, praising, and coding. We like our managers to be hands-on while ensuring they are not on the critical path.

Team and work scope

We have a team of 25+ engineers in Europe. You’ll help manage the growing team and you may work on projects yourself. Some examples of work engineering leaders have done include:

  • Provide feedback on product and technical specs to help engineers identify where to cut scope or improve quality. You don’t make the final decisions, but you’ll influence and coach ICs to reach the right ones.
  • Grow engineers to take large, loosely defined projects and deliver them with little intervention while knowing when to ask for help.
  • Debug customer issues, ship small bug fixes, or improve developer experience by staying technically active while not being on the critical path.
  • Improve how we generate and simulate data in demo accounts, impacting the business from Engineering to QA to Sales.
Why become a manager

People often learn through great and terrible management experiences. This role is about supporting engineers with thoughtful coaching and creating an environment where people can thrive. There is value in staying technically engaged and, if possible, hands-on as a manager and IC when appropriate.

What we’re looking for

We seek someone who is passionate about both management and technical work, can spot patterns, improve operations, and build automation. You should have experience introducing processes that enable engineers to work with ownership and automation. You should be able to build abstractions that empower engineers to improve automation themselves.

Qualifications and mindset
  • Strong technical background with the ability to hold in-depth conversations across infra to backend to frontend.
  • Enjoy management problems and driving people to be their best, with the ability to give difficult feedback and build systems to support it.
  • High standards for your team and comfort with details and feedback, even for top performers.
  • Excellent and empathetic communication; ability to navigate beliefs, opinions, and experiences of engineers and influence change while remaining open to feedback.
  • Understanding of what exceptional engineers look like, with depth beyond generic descriptions.
  • Interest in product, business, and design, but focus on building a team that can make the best decisions without you.
  • Thrive in high-trust, high-autonomy environments; willingness to build a strong onboarding path and feedback loops.
  • Willingness to code occasionally and stay up-to-date on technology.
What we’re building

We aim to build a hiring process that identifies great candidates, moves them quickly, and provides an excellent candidate experience. A sample challenge is scheduling and coordinating interviews and calendar logistics across teams to balance workload and training needs.

Culture and engineering

Our engineering culture is guided by our co-founders’ belief that a small, talented team with the right environment can produce high-quality software fast and work regular hours. Collaboration is natural, and communication is deliberate. We emphasize focus time and provide time for engineers to work without constant meetings.

Technology stack

We use TypeScript (frontend and backend), Node.js, React, Apollo GraphQL, Postgres, Redis. Prior experience is not required for all roles.

Benefits
  • Competitive salary and equity.
  • 10-year exercise window for stock options.
  • Unlimited PTO with a recommended four weeks per year.
  • Generous equipment, software, and office furniture budget.
  • $100/month education budget with manager approval for higher-cost items.
