Job description

Job Description Summary

The Engineering Manager – Bay & Test is responsible for all activities associated with our most critical assets for development in the Magnetic Resonance (MR) Waukesha facility – our engineering bays – and the personnel that run them. This includes ownership of assets and personnel associated with our program verification and validation (V&V) processes, including V&V engineers, test equipment labs, and technicians.

This role manages a group of technicians and engineers from multiple disciplines focused on maintaining development and test assets within the MR business. The role also provides leadership and governance for the Engineering Change Process, ensuring effective execution, scalability, and compliance of Engineering Change Requests (ECRs) and Engineering Change Orders (ECOs) while driving cross‑functional alignment and continuous process improvement.

This role requires a highly engaged, visible, and hands‑on leader who is comfortable operating in an engineering lab and test environment. The leader will work closely with technicians and engineers in day‑to‑day operations, ensuring strong team engagement, efficient execution, and effective use of critical development assets.

In addition to people leadership, the position will allocate time to support strategic efforts such as facilities operations, material management, asset financial control, EHS engineering representation, and development of bay, test, and calibration processes and roadmaps.

This position reports to the Sr Director of Program Management and Integration in the Waukesha Innovation Center and requires strong operational judgment, autonomy, and leadership capability to achieve business goals.

Roles and Responsibilities
  • Manage a team of skilled engineering technicians and engineers from multiple disciplines, creating a high‑performing, collaborative, and accountable team environment.
  • Provide strong, visible people leadership with a hands‑on presence in engineering bays and test environments, building trust and engagement with technicians and engineers.
  • Lead the design, implementation, and maintenance planning for engineering bay and test infrastructure to ensure MR test assets are available and ready for use.
  • Develop and execute short‑, mid‑, and long‑term bay planning strategies, including prioritization of technician work and long‑range asset planning.
  • Establish and improve processes associated with engineering test asset scheduling and real‑time usage.
  • Ensure training and adherence to established bay usage practices across the engineering organization.
  • Lead the engineering test equipment calibration lab, including personnel, processes, and continuous improvement efforts.
  • Own the engineering contractor agency relationship and lead prioritization, efficiency improvements, and performance evaluation of external resources.
  • Represent the MR Engineering organization in facilities maintenance, planning, and future development initiatives.
  • Lead advocacy for excellence in engineering EHS practices.
  • Foster strong collaboration across engineering, facilities, quality, manufacturing, sourcing, and program teams.
  • Lead business planning processes including recruitment, talent development, retention, and organizational growth.
  • Build and sustain a team culture that encourages innovation, collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement.
  • Challenge teams to improve processes and optimize engineering, development, and support activities.
  • Set clear expectations, coach and develop team members, manage performance, and provide ongoing feedback.
  • Lead and govern the Engineering Change Process (ECR/ECO), ensuring timely execution and strong cross‑functional coordination.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in an Engineering discipline.
  • Minimum 10 years of engineering experience in a product design and development environment.
  • Minimum 3 years of demonstrated people leadership experience.
  • Proven experience leading teams that include engineering technicians or technical/trade personnel in a hands‑on lab, manufacturing, or test environment.
  • Deep functional expertise in engineering discipline and problem solving.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate and deliver results in a global team.
  • Strong cross‑functional collaboration and influencing skills.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to gain buy‑in for initiatives.
Desired Characteristics
  • Experience working in a highly regulated industry such as medical devices, healthcare, or similar environments.
  • Experience with global product releases across the full product lifecycle.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects, balancing resources, timing, and quality.
  • Strong mentoring, coaching, and talent development skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work cross‑functionally and influence senior leadership.
  • Experience interfacing with suppliers and manufacturing teams.
  • Strong project management skills.
  • Approachable, down‑to‑earth leadership style with the ability to connect effectively with both technicians and engineers.
