Job summary

Kira Learning, Inc. is seeking an Engineering Manager to lead a multi-disciplinary team delivering complex product and platform capabilities for education technology.

You will own people, technical quality, and impactful classroom outcomes, while shaping architecture and reviewing consequential code. The role requires hands-on coding when valuable, strong leadership, and the ability to operate across US and APAC teams in a hybrid model based in San Francisco or New York City.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's or Master’s degree in Computer Science, or equivalent technical experience.
• 8+ years professional engineering experience, including designing, shipping, and operating production systems.
• 2+ years managing mid, senior and lead level software engineers.
• Technical depth comparable to a strong Senior or Staff+ Software Engineer, with hands-on review of changes.
• Strong system design and debugging skills across architecture, APIs, data models, distributed systems, performance, failures.
• Track record of developing engineers into independent owners including senior engineers or tech leads.
• Experience giving difficult feedback and running career conversations.
• Strong execution judgment—breaking down ambiguous problems and sequencing work.

Responsibilities

• Turn company priorities into clear problems, ownership, and milestones.
• Review consequential work and coach engineers on system design, data modeling, debugging, performance, reliability, code quality, and security.
• Give ownership and coach engineers through increasing ambiguity and delegation.
• Set expectations, give timely feedback, and address gaps before reviews.
• Ensure designs consider realistic failure modes and peak load, and respond to incidents effectively.
• Partner with Product and Design to define problems and ensure real-world classroom relevance.
• Maintain clear ownership and decision rights; invite disagreement and resolve conflicts.
