Job summary

Edurio is seeking an Engineering Manager to lead our development team and own how we work. You will guide five developers and a QA engineer, set expectations, support growth, and ensure delivery of both the survey platform and Edurio Hub.

You will still write code as a player-coach, coordinate delivery with Product, and explain technical trade-offs to non-technical colleagues. Our stack includes Vue, TypeScript, AWS CDK, Postgres, and testing tools; a passion for people leadership and quality

Qualifications

  • Experience leading an engineering team that builds with coding agents.
  • Ability to handle the people side: accountability, wellbeing and growth conversations.
  • Sufficient seniority to coordinate work while not needing to be the single most experienced engineer.
  • Experience establishing and teaching development processes.
  • Familiarity with the Vue/AWS tech stack is desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the developers and the QA engineer: expectations and performance, growth, workload and wellbeing, hiring future engineers.
  • Actively participate in writing code yourself - player-coach rather than a detached manager.
  • Own the team’s commitments, release planning and adjust plans as needed.
  • Own how we estimate work and ensure estimation accuracy and consistency.
  • Run the rhythm the team works to: standups, planning, demos and retrospectives.
  • Ensure development standards are followed and highlight gaps between standards and practice.
  • Own how development and product work together from kick-off to release.
  • Explain technical concepts to non-technical colleagues and stakeholders.

Job description

Edurio is on its way to improving education quality globally and we're looking for great people to join us on the journey.

We help schools and school groups survey their parents, pupils, and staff to build organisations where people thrive. We currently work with over 2000 schools in the United Kingdom and Latvia and are planning to grow significantly in the next year.

As an Engineering Manager, you will lead our development team and own what it commits to. You will also own how the team works, so that a new developer can learn it in their first week.

The development team and how we work

You would lead our development team, five people today and growing: four developers and a QA engineer. Product is a separate team of four, led by our Lead Product Manager.

Our Principal Engineer works alongside you and owns the architecture, the database schema, the technologies we build on, and what our development standard says. You own the people, the commitments, the process, and whether the standard is followed in the work that ships. Neither of you reports to the other, and you both report to the Director of Product and Service.

This role is being created as part of the restructure that comes with becoming a multi-product company.

Our developers direct coding agents and verify what comes back, so most of an engineer's day is design and review rather than manually writing code.

We run two products on one platform: the survey software, and Edurio Hub, the second product we are building now. The platform is mid-migration, so we are reducing the PHP monolith, moving the front end to Vue 3, and building new services on AWS with CDK.

You would be working with Vue and TypeScript, AWS Lambda and CDK, and with Linear, Slack, Claude, and other tools of your choice.

Our tech stack

We write almost everything in TypeScript and run it on AWS.

  • Front end
    - Vue 3, TypeScript, Vuetify and Vite

  • Back end
    - TypeScript on Node.js and Bun
    - REST and GraphQL APIs
    - AI features built on Claude through Amazon Bedrock

  • Data
    - PostgreSQL, MySQL, DynamoDB and Redis
    - S3 and AWS Glue for reporting data

  • Infrastructure and operations
    - AWS: Lambda, API Gateway, ECS Fargate, RDS, SQS, Step Functions and EventBridge
    - Infrastructure as code with AWS CDK, and Docker
    - GitHub Actions for CI
    - Grafana, OpenTelemetry and Sentry

  • Testing
    - Vitest, Bun test and Playwright

  • How we build
    - Claude Code and OpenAI Codex as coding agents
    - MCP servers that connect the agents to Linear, Grafana and Sentry
    - Agent and human review on every pull request, with work tracked in Linear

Your responsibilities
  • Lead the developers and the QA engineer: expectations and performance, growth, workload and wellbeing, keeping people here, and hiring future engineers

  • Actively participate in writing code yourself - we are looking for a player-coach rather than a manager who is removed from coding

  • Own the team’s commitments, release planning and adjusting the plan when something unexpected happens

  • Own how we estimate work and ensure the accuracy and consistency of estimates given by the development team

  • Run the rhythm the team works to: standups, planning, demos and retrospectives

  • Ensure that the team follows our development standards and highlight situations where our standards do not match current practice

  • Own how development and product work together, from the kick-off to a release the product team can explain to clients

  • Explain the technical side to the rest of the company: what an incident means, what a security questionnaire is asking for, and what a constraint will cost

What we’re looking for
  • Experience of leading in an engineering team that builds with coding agents

  • Ability to handle the people side: holding the team accountable, ensuring the team’s wellbeing and leading growth planning and performance conversations.

  • Enough seniority h in engineering to coordinate the team’s work, although we don’t expect you to be the most experienced engineer in the room

  • Experience putting a development process in place and teaching it, rather than running one you inherited

  • Ability to explain delivery, risk and trade-offs to people who do not write software

  • Advanced use of AI and coding agents in your own work

  • Excellent verbal and written English skills

Useful, but we do not expect all of these:
  • Experience with Typescript, Vue or AWS serverless

  • Experience of a platform migration that ran alongside feature work

  • Experience or interest in the EdTech sector

This is probably not for you if:
  • You want to fully own the architecture and the technology choices

  • You want to code full time and leave the people side to somebody else

  • You want to join a team whose process is already settled

The attitudes we'd like to see

Ownership: You do what you said you would do, and take responsibility for how it lands with the client - not just for completing the task

Genuine care: You build real relationships with clients and colleagues, assume good intentions, and do the right thing rather than the easy thing

Openness: You communicate honestly, don't shy away from difficult conversations, and give and receive feedback well

Growth: You're curious about how things could work better, and you act on what you learn rather than defaulting to how it's always been done

What we offer

Experience in growing in an international company and a chance to have an impact on education quality

Feedback-based work culture which highly values transparency and team well-being

Flexible working hours. For colleagues based in Latvia we offer a hybrid setup with an office in Riga. The UK-based colleagues are fully remote.

Gross salary from EUR 5000 per month in Latvia or GBP 60,000 per annum in the UK, as well as company share options, paid phone plan, and health insurance.
