Location: Fully remote. Candidates based in or near St. Louis, Missouri are a plus.
Overview: Signal Mine is hiring an Engineering Manager to lead a small, growing engineering team and make delivery more predictable, sustainable, and disciplined. This is a delivery-first leadership role for a practical engineering manager who can bring clarity to work in motion, maintain healthy team capacity, and represent engineering credibly with clients. This is not a standard individual-contributor role: you will not be expected to write production code or carry a regular coding workload.
You will report to the VP of Delivery and help grow the engineering team while preserving the operating practices that make it effective.
Run effective stand-ups and delivery rituals that surface risks, clarify priorities, and keep work moving.
Turn approved requirements into clear, actionable work; ensure tickets are well scoped, owned, and sequenced.
Assign work intentionally across the team, balancing delivery needs, individual strengths, growth opportunities, and sustainable capacity.
Track delivery health, remove blockers, and communicate tradeoffs early.
Protect the team from burnout by managing workload, prioritization, and expectations with care.
Ensure the team follows Signal Mine’s documentation, agentic-coding, and testing practices consistently.
Make quality and process adherence part of normal delivery rather than an after-the-fact cleanup step.
Identify gaps in execution, clarify expectations, and work with the team to strengthen repeatable delivery habits.
Use sound technical judgment to ask the right questions, recognize delivery risk, and hold a high bar for well-tested work.
Represent engineering with clients and partners
Participate in client conversations when engineering context, delivery status, or technical tradeoffs need to be explained.
Translate technical work into clear, practical language for clients, the VP of Delivery, and customer-facing teammates.
Build confidence through direct communication, reliable follow-through, and an accurate view of what the team can deliver.
Grow and support the team
Provide regular feedback, performance guidance, and career development for direct reports.
Create a team environment where engineers can do focused, sustainable work and develop their judgment.
Partner with the VP of Delivery and company leadership on hiring, interview evaluation, and team growth.
What Success Looks Like
Delivery becomes more predictable: priorities are clear, work is assigned deliberately, risks are visible, and commitments are communicated early.
Engineering practices are followed consistently: documentation is current, agentic coding is used responsibly, and testing is a non-negotiable part of delivery.
The team operates sustainably: workload is balanced, burnout risk is actively managed, and engineers have room to grow.
lients and internal partners have greater confidence in engineering’s communication, execution, and ability to explain technical tradeoffs.
The engineering team grows without losing clarity, quality, or accountability.
What You Bring
Prior formal experience managing an engineering team of more than one or two people.
A practical leadership style developed in a startup, agency, product, or similarly fast-moving environment.
Strong delivery-management skills: translating requirements into work, setting priorities, assigning ownership, managing capacity, and resolving blockers.
Enough technical fluency to discuss modern software delivery with engineers and clients, including web services, cloud infrastructure, systems integration, and testing practices.
Comfort leading a team that uses AI-assisted and agentic coding workflows. Deep prior experience with these workflows is not required; willingness and ability to implement Signal Mine’s established process is.
Clear, grounded communication with technical and non-technical audiences.
A people-first approach that combines accountability, direct feedback, and sustainable expectations.
