Job summary

Open Select in San Francisco is seeking a senior AI/ML engineering leader to own and scale the AI org from day one. You’ll build three teams: AI infrastructure, agent intelligence, and agentic products, while staying hands-on in code and architecture.

Location: San Francisco, CA (on-site, 5 days per week in office)

Who you'll join

A domain-specific AI company building agents for the trillion-dollar insurance industry, automating workflows like submission intake, policy comparisons, and underwriting audits. A process that used to take an underwriter 6 to 8 hours now takes 10 to 15 minutes. Backed by top-tier venture investors with $30M+ raised, the company already supports customers writing $15B+ in premiums across all 50 states. Both founders are engineers, and the team is a tight-knit ~30 to 40 people who move fast and wear multiple hats.

What you'll do

• Own and scale the entire AI org, growing it into three teams: AI infrastructure, agent intelligence, and agentic products
• Set technical direction for agents running on real customer money, including model routing, multi-agent orchestration, and reliability
• Recruit, mentor, and retain a world-class engineering team, hiring the leaders beneath you as the org scales post-Series A
• Stay deeply technical, still in the code and architecture, setting the bar by example
• Push the frontier of what AI agents can do for insurance as the space evolves

Who you are

• Your most recent experience must be at an early-stage or high-growth B2B SaaS startup. This is not flexible. Big tech only or legacy enterprise backgrounds will not be considered
• Recent, hands-on and active, not just overseeing. You can talk through production-grade AI agent systems you've personally shipped, including multi-agent orchestration and model routing
• Strong startup pedigree. Ideally from a hot, branded, high-growth company or with genuine early-stage ownership
• Have led a team of 10+ engineers while staying technically engaged, not someone who has moved fully into people management
• 7+ years in AI/ML engineering
• Comfortable being a recruiting magnet in your own right. This person is expected to help attract other top-tier talent to the team
