Job summary

Qualifications

• 5+ years in industrial automation, machine design, or custom systems integration and 5+ years directly managing engineers.
• Experience managing complex, multi-discipline projects and schedules.
• Experience using data/KPIs to manage engineering teams and projects.
• Background in mechanical or controls/electrical engineering with cross-disciplinary knowledge.
• Experience with turnkey automation including PLC, HMI, machine vision, and motion control.

Responsibilities

• Lead and develop a team of 7–8 engineers across mechanical and controls/electrical disciplines; recruit for open Senior Mechanical and Controls/Electrical Engineer roles.
• Mentor early-career engineers and foster ownership and accountability.
• Oversee end-to-end custom automation projects across multiple concurrent engagements.
• Provide technical oversight and design reviews across application, mechanical, and electrical/controls work.
• Serve as the engineering point of contact for customers on complex or escalated issues.
• Collaborate with Application Engineering and Sales Engineering through proposal, design, production, testing, and installation phases.
• Drive metric-driven performance by tracking KPIs and using data to guide decisions.

We're looking for an experienced Engineering Manager to lead our custom automation engineering team. Customers come to us with problems on their machines or processes, and our team engineers the solution – from electrical panel design to full turn-key systems integrating cobots, robots, vision systems, and sensors. This is not a product development role.

You'll lead a team of 3 mechanical engineers (one senior opening, two early-career) and 3-4 controls/electrical engineers (currently two on the team, two openings to fill), balancing hands-on technical leadership with team building and talent development.

What You'll Do

• Manage and develop 7–8 engineers across mechanical and controls/electrical disciplines; recruit to fill open Senior Mechanical and Controls/Electrical Engineer roles
• Mentor early-career engineers and build a culture of ownership and accountability
• Oversee custom, customer-facing automation projects end-to-end – scoping, design, schedule, and delivery – across multiple concurrent projects
• Provide technical oversight and design review across application, mechanical and electrical/controls work
• Serve as an engineering point of contact for customers on complex or escalated issues
• Partner closely with the Application Engineering and Sales Engineering teams throughout the project lifecycle, from scoping and proposal support through design, production, testing and installation
• Drive metric-driven performance management – tracking team and KPIs (design cycle time, schedule adherence, quality, throughput, budget, etc.) to guide decisions and hold the team accountable

What You Bring

• 5+ years in industrial automation, machine design, or custom systems integration; 5+ years directly managing and developing engineers
• Proven ability to manage complex, multi-discipline projects and schedules, and to hold self and others accountable
• Strong believer in metric-driven performance management, with experience using data/KPIs to manage engineering teams and projects
• Strong background in mechanical or controls/electrical engineering, with working knowledge of the other disciplines
• Experience with custom/turn-key automation (industrial control systems, including but not limited to PLC, HMI, Machine Vision and Motion Control Products)
• Strong cross-functional collaboration skills, particularly with Application Engineering and Sales Engineering
• Strong customer-facing communication skills
• BS in Mechanical, Software or Electrical Engineering, or equivalent experience

Preferred: experience hiring/scaling a team; electrical panel/controls design background; robotic integration platform experience (SICK, COGNEX, UR, MITSUBISHI, MIR, etc.); system integrator or custom machine builder background.
