Job summary

Vantedge Medical (formerly Hobson & Motzer) is seeking an Engineering Manager to lead Manufacturing Engineering and NPI efforts in support of medical device production. You will coordinate projects, set plans, and drive process improvements across a cross-functional team in a on-site setting.

The role emphasizes manufacturing leadership, quality systems, and supplier/customer collaboration, with responsibility for hiring and performance management within the engineering group.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Engineering or related technical field.
• 10+ years of experience in a related manufacturing role.
• Medical device industry experience strongly preferred, including FAIR, Gage R&R and capability studies.
• Strong knowledge of ISO 13485:2016, Mil-Spec or similar quality environment.
• Broad knowledge of precision metal forming: presses, tooling, machining, assembly, welding, coatings.
• Ability to read and interpret complex drawings/specifications.
• Working knowledge of MRP/ERP systems (ProfitKey a plus).
• Advanced skills in Word and Excel.
• CAD/CAM knowledge: SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Mastercam.
• PFMEA, APQP and GD&T experience.
• Lean and Six Sigma experience a plus.

About the Role:

Reporting to the Sr. Site Director, the Engineering Manager leads and manages all Manufacturing Engineering and NPI (New Product Introduction) Engineering activities. This may include but is not limited to: Coordination and directing department projects, make detailed plans to accomplish goals and integration of technical activities, supporting quality engineering and tool design, providing weekly status reporting on active and inactive engineering projects. This position directly manages Manufacturing and NPI Engineering.

Engineering Leadership and Operations

• Make sure the right project management tools, engineering processes and systems are in place so technical staff can work effectively and efficiently.
• Prioritize and balance staff workload as internal and external customer needs change.
• Oversee operating procedures and guidelines that give the engineering department a consistent, thorough and methodical approach to product development.
• Prepare written documentation to put new or revised procedures in place.
• Identify and implement new hardware and software for the department.
• Take on problems of significant scope, using strong initiative to direct staff toward manufacturing support and process improvement.
• Work independently. Significant or cross-functional projects may need approval from the Sr. Site Director, Director of Engineering or COO.

Manufacturing Support and Continuous Improvement

• Work with Manufacturing Supervisors and Engineers to develop, maintain and improve setups, operator training, and metrics for production, quality and safety.
• Set group and individual objectives and metrics based on SQDC (Safety, Quality, Delivery, Cost) priorities.
• Work with the site leadership team to complete year-over-year cost reduction activities.
• Help build a culture of excellence in safety, quality, continuous improvement and operational effectiveness.

Communication and Collaboration

• Represent the Engineering Department in corporate committees and meetings.
• Respond to and resolve engineering requests from internal and external stakeholders, clarifying project constraints, priorities and feedback.

People Leadership

• Hold overall responsibility for hiring, supervising and the performance of Engineering Department staff.
• Make sure the department has the talent, capacity and capability the business needs.
• Give regular performance feedback through check-ins, recognition and documented disciplinary action, and recommend pay adjustments when appropriate.
• Build employee engagement by encouraging teamwork, unity and shared success.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related technical field
• 10+ years of experience in a related manufacturing role
• Medical device industry experience strongly preferred, including FAIR, Gage R&R and capability studies
• Strong knowledge of manufacturing systems, including shop floor processes, ERP systems and quality procedures, in an ISO 13485:2016, Mil-Spec or similar quality environment
• Broad, in-depth knowledge of precision metal forming processes, including press operations, progressive die tooling, machining, assembly, fabrication, welding and coatings
• Ability to read and interpret complex customer drawings and specifications
• Working knowledge of MRP/ERP systems (ProfitKey a plus)
• Advanced skills in word processing and spreadsheets
• Basic knowledge of CAD/CAM software (SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Mastercam)
• Strong background in statistical and scientific problem solving, technical documentation, PFMEA, APQP and GD&T
• Strong verbal and written communication skills, including clear written instructions for complex processes and creating process flowcharts and process maps
• Lean manufacturing experience and Six Sigma training a plus
