Position Summary
Central State University’s Department of Engineering and Technology(DoET) seeks an Engineering Lab Technician to support instructionaland research laboratory operations. This position supports the ABET-accredited Environmental Engineering and Manufacturing Engineeringprograms in DoET, as well as the proposed three-year acceleratedbachelor’s degree program in Applied Technologies.
The Engineering Lab Technician supports teaching, research, andlaboratory operations by maintaining laboratory workspaces,analytical instruments, and engineering equipment. The position isresponsible for the upkeep of DoET laboratory facilities,compliance with safety standards, and coordinating with andassisting faculty and students with the proper use of equipment andprocedures. The incumbent will demonstrate procedures, monitor safeuse, and help ensure reliable and efficient laboratoryoperations.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Assist with the preparation of ABET - EAC and ATMAE self-studiesand related accreditation materials.
- Support faculty and students with laboratory equipment andprocedures in Mc Lin and Jenkins Hall laboratories with thecoordination and guidance of the faculty.
- Assist faculty with the acquisition, setup, maintenance, andtroubleshooting of laboratory equipment.
- Maintain inventory of supplies and services, organize laboratoryworkspaces, and assist with budget planning and supplyprojections.
- Order equipment and supplies, prepare materials fordemonstrations and class assignments, and maintain cleanlaboratory, storage, and preparation areas.
- Serve as the DoET laboratory safety officer by promotingcompliance with safety procedures and proper handling and disposalof materials used in instruction and research.
- Provide laboratory housekeeping, maintenance, and securitysupport.
- Maintain operating and maintenance manuals and related files formajor equipment.
- Monitor the use of equipment, tools, and shop supplies.
- Provide instruction to students and faculty on the safe andproper operation of departmental equipment.
- Supervise work-study students and/or student research assistants,as assigned.
- Lead the development, implementation, and enforcement oflaboratory policies and procedures.
- Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by thedepartment chairperson.
- Ensure completion of annual or biennial laboratory safetycertification through the university or a recognized externalbody.
Minimum Qualifications
- An associate degree in engineering technology or a related fieldis preferred but not required.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the abilityto work effectively with diverse populations.
- Authorization to work in the United States.
- Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 30 pounds.
- A valid driver’s license at the time of appointment.
Preferred Qualifications
- A bachelor’s degree in engineering technology, generalengineering, or a related field is preferred but notrequired.
- Two to three years of experience working in an engineeringlaboratory.
- Relevant licenses or certifications in engineering technology orengineering are preferred.
- Experience with water quality, air quality, energy, and GISlaboratory equipment.
- Experience with fundamental manufacturing and assemblyprocesses.
- Experience with Solid Edge, Unigraphics NX, and Mastercam, or theability to learn these software packages quickly.
- Experience with hands-on CAD / CAM / CNC programming andoperation of the Feeler VMP -580 Machining Center, Pro Trak 1630Turning Center, and EDM machine, or the ability to acquire theseskills quickly.
- Proficiency in the use of personal computers and related softwareapplications.
- Strong technical knowledge of laboratory procedures andassociated equipment.
- Excellent customer service and organizational skills.
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally andin writing.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationshipswith staff, faculty, and students.
- Strong oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills fortraining students and faculty in equipment use and laboratoryoperations.
