Job summary

Virginia Department of Transportation is seeking a student intern to support field and office projects while integrating classroom knowledge with practical work in the field. You will gain hands-on experience in engineering technology, documentation, data entry, and equipment maintenance.

The role emphasizes effective communication, teamwork, and adherence to safety and quality standards. You will work under supervision, with flexible hours to accommodate course schedules and pre-employment

Qualifications

Currently enrolled full-time in an Associate’s degree program or higher.
Have a basic knowledge of engineering principles.
Must be at least 18 years of age by the start of employment.
Must maintain a full-time graduate status taking 9 or more credit hours per semester at a college/university before and following internship.
Must maintain a full-time undergraduate status taking 12 or more credit hours per semester at a community college or 4-year college/university before and following internship.

Responsibilities

Communication with VDOT staff and external contacts; resolve issues at the lowest level; project a positive VDOT image.
Apply principles and practices of engineering technology to assigned program areas; interpret policies and procedures.
Perform routine maintenance and repairs on testing equipment; follow guidelines for storage, use, and transport.
Perform duties as assigned and ensure timely project documentation.
Prepare and maintain daily documentation of project activities; avoid delays and resolve issues.
Maintain accurate records for all project activities; enter and update data to meet deadlines and requirements.
