Job summary

Jobtailor in New York State is seeking interns to work on real-world engineering projects under the guidance of experienced engineers. You will support transmission engineering design, system planning, operations, asset management, and project management across generation, distribution, and environmental initiatives.

The program targets ABET-accredited degree students in nuclear, mechanical, civil, chemical, electrical, industrial & systems engineering, or related fields.

Qualifications

  • Enrolled in ABET-accredited Bachelor’s or Master’s in Nuclear, Mechanical, Civil, Chemical, Electrical, Industrial & Systems Engineering
  • Must not graduate prior to August 2026

Responsibilities

  • Work on real-world engineering projects and learn from experienced engineers
  • Support transmission engineering design, assessment, analysis, equipment reliability, transmission lines, structures, protection and controls systems, and physical/electrical components
  • Undertake responsibilities in electric distribution design, system planning, operations, asset management, and project management
  • Manage and maintain equipment, assist with grid planning and sectionalization, complete equipment installation/replacement designs, and oversee distribution systems
  • Support groundwater‑related environmental projects, inspections, monitoring, remediation, permits, licensing/relicensing, and regulatory compliance
  • Work on generation facility safety, efficiency, system performance, reliability, cost, environmental compliance, plant systems, maintenance, and energy production
  • Develop, design, construct, and start up renewable generation, energy storage, turbines, advanced nuclear, pumped storage hydro, and emerging technologies
  • Support natural gas distribution operations
  • Support nuclear generation engineering priorities, fleet uprates, fuel‑cycle projects, and advanced fuel evaluations
  • Work on front‑end engineering design for small modular reactor technology and site‑specific engineering development
  • Collaborate with engineers and project managers in office and field construction assignments
  • Potentially travel to project sites and work 40‑hour weeks during a 10–12‑week summer session

Job description

Requirements
  • Enrolled in and pursuing an ABET‑accredited Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Nuclear, Mechanical, Civil, Chemical, Electrical, Industrial & Systems Engineering
  • Alternatively enrolled in and pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering Technology or Construction Management
  • Must not graduate prior to August 2026
  • Cumulative college GPA of 2.75 or higher
  • Previous Duke Energy intern/co‑op experience preferred
  • Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher preferred
  • Demonstrated technical proficiency with computers, software, and engineering applications, including CAD tools, MFAD, STAAD Pro, MATLAB, PSS/E, and Power World
  • Previous engineering work experience preferred
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to provide the quantity and quality of work necessary to reach an accomplishment
  • Leadership qualities through effective decision making
  • Ability to work effectively with people from diverse backgrounds
  • Ability to deliver results within allocated time through prioritization, scheduling, planning, and execution
  • Some opportunities require a valid driver’s license
  • Reliable, consistent transportation required
  • May be required to meet unescorted access/security clearance requirements
  • Must wear required personal protective equipment
  • Must be able to work lawfully in the U.S. without employment‑based immigration sponsorship, now or in the future
