Job summary

Duke Energy is seeking an Engineer I/II to perform engineering work within the Transmission Planning organization in Raleigh, NC. The role supports Facility Ratings coordination for DEP and NERC FAC‑008 activities, and contributes to model updates, voltage and load calculations, and planning studies.

The position requires ABET‑accredited engineering education, with Master’s preferred, and experience with planning tools like PSSE or TARA. Strong communication and teamwork are essential.

Qualifications

  • Master's in Electric Power Systems preferred
  • Strong understanding of engineering principles and problem solving

  • Good written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to work in U.S. without sponsorship

Job description

  • Perform engineering work in Duke Energy's Transmission Planning organization
  • Serve as a Facility Ratings Coordinator for DEP, supporting NERC FAC-008 facility rating activities across the DEP region
  • Support transmission model updates, voltage and load calculations, planning studies, and related efforts
  • Provide engineering and technical expertise in identifying, analyzing, and resolving well-defined problems
  • Contribute to team decision-making through planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling, and monitoring work activities
  • Prepare technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations, and sketches
  • Conduct engineering and related studies and complete routine engineering projects with minimal oversight
  • Design, operate, and maintain systems with minimal impact on existing systems
  • Interpret technical information and instructions
  • Coordinate work activities through positive working relationships
  • Maintain accurate records and files
  • Represent the company positively and professionally
  • Travel to field sites and/or plants as required by the business unit
Requirements
  • Engineer I: Graduation from a four-year college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program
  • Engineer II: Graduation from a four-year college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program
  • A Master's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. engineering degree
  • Engineer II: 2 years engineering work experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering desired
  • Master's in Electric Power Systems preferred
  • Experience with PSSE, TARA, or similar planning-study tools preferred
  • Understanding of basic engineering theories and principles
  • Programming experience in Python, batch files, or Visual Basic preferred
  • Experience with NERC Reliability Standards preferred
  • Understanding of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making recommendations, and presenting recommendations
  • Good written and oral communication skills
  • Passing grade on the Engineering Fundamentals Exam preferred
  • Understanding of basic project management principles
  • Utility industry experience preferred
  • Department-specific experience applicable to the hiring department preferred
  • Ability to work lawfully in the U.S. without employment-based immigration sponsorship, now or in the future
  • Ability to live within a reasonable daily commute to the designated Duke Energy facility
