Job summary

City of Victoria, TX is seeking an Engineering Inspector to supervise and inspect Public Works projects involving water, sanitary sewers, draining, streets, and sidewalks. The position requires attention to safety, quality control, and documentation of daily progress.

Responsibilities

  • Inspects construction projects including bridges, utilities, streets, and sewers to ensure conformance with plans and policies.
  • Checks sites for safety hazards and recommends solutions.
  • Evaluates materials quality and onsite quantities for each project.
  • Oversees site tests and materials testing activities.
  • Maintains project documentation: reports, submittals, change orders, payments.
  • Records daily progress and communicates with all project stakeholders.
  • Performs final walk-throughs and documents nonconformities with photos.
  • Assists drafters with design and drafting work for projects.
  • Assists with surveying tasks and determines property lines and grades.
  • Prepares reports, charts, and maps to support engineers.
  • Responds to public inquiries and serves as liaison with owners and contractors.
  • Attends meetings and maintains required licensing.

Job description

Under general supervision, the Engineering Inspector manages, oversees, and inspects Public Works projects involving water, sanitary sewers, draining, streets, and sidewalks

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Inspects construction projects to include bridges, utilities, streets, traffic signals, traffic striping, storm sewer systems, and other public improvement projects to ensure conformance to City plans, specifications, ordinances, and policies.
  • Checks projects sites for safety hazards; reports construction problems and makes recommendations for solutions.
  • Evaluates the quality construction materials; verifies the correct quantities of all required materials are onsite for each project.
  • Oversees and participates in site and materials tests to include pressure, bacteriological, and vacuum testing.
  • Prepares and maintains project documentation including correspondence, daily reports, materials testing results, record drawings, submittals, change orders, and payment requests.
  • Records daily job progress; maintains communication with all parties involved with projects.
  • Performs final walk-throughs at project sites; takes photographs and documents items that do not meet specifications and plans.
  • Assists drafters in design and drafting of construction projects.
  • Assists with surveying activities as assigned; determines grades; locates property lines.
  • Prepares reports, charts, and maps to support the work of engineers.
  • Answers public questions about construction projects; responds to complaints; serves as liaison between property owners and contractors.
  • Attends and participates in various meetings as required or assigned; maintains all required licensing.
  • Performs related duties as required or assigned.

Work is performed in a standard office environment and in the field at various projects sites. While in the field, may be exposed to inclement weather conditions, traffic hazards, and potentially dangerous tools, equipment, and machinery. May be required to climb ladders and traverse uneven surfaces.

  • High school diploma or GED Equivalent AND three (3) years of construction related experience, OR an equivalent combination of education training, and eduction.
  • A valid State driver's license.
  • Able to read and interpret civil construction drawings.
  • General office policies, procedures, and practices.
  • Records maintenance and retention practices and procedures.
  • Surveying practices and methods.
  • Tools, materials, methods, and equipment used in the construction, maintenance, and repair of public works infrastructure.
  • Work safety policies, procedures, and practices.
  • Material testing procedures and quality standards.
  • Conflict resolution methods and strategies.
  • Completing accurate mathematic calculations.
  • Interacting tactfully and professionally with City staff, outside agencies, and the public.
  • Organizing work and setting priorities to meet deadlines.
  • Reading and accurately interpreting blueprints, plans, and schematics.
  • Typing and entering data with speed and accuracy.
  • Drafting maps and charts.
  • Maintaining accurate records and filing systems.
  • Preparing clear and concise reports.
  • Communicating effectively both verbally and in writing.
