Job Summary
Performs daily operations related to improving, rebuilding, and maintaining interior roads and related structures within watersheds, often working in remote and steep locations in wildland environments. Responsibilities include installing culverts, clearing ditches, removing trees, and clearing brush and tree stumps.
Essential Job Functions
- Operate tracked and wheeled earth-moving heavy equipment for maintenance, rebuilding, and repair tasks.
- Ensure safe operation and proper maintenance of machinery; report malfunctions or safety concerns immediately.
- Operate dump trucks to spread gravel in remote and steep locations.
- Use forestry mulching equipment to cut fire breaks.
- Construct and install erosion control devices such as retaining walls, sediment ponds, and silt fences.
- Operate various construction and maintenance tools, including chainsaws, rotary hammers, concrete saws, and pumps.
- Handle hauling of rock, soil, debris, equipment, and materials to and from work sites.
- Maintain fire roads and ensure adherence to safety policies and procedures.
Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED, with 3-5 years of experience in operating earth-moving heavy equipment for road construction and maintenance, or equivalent education and experience.
- Valid driver’s license.
- First Aid and CPR certification, or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire.
- Experience in construction, reconstruction, and maintenance of forest roads, tributary crossings, and fire breaks to USFS standards.
- Experience operating forestry mulching equipment and chain saws in forest environments.
- Experience in erosion control device construction, including retaining walls, sediment ponds, and silt fences.
