Job summary

California Water Service Group (Cal Water) invites you to build a meaningful career as a junior level CAD technician. Located across multiple CA offices including San Jose, Bakersfield, Chico and Torrance, you will create construction level CAD drawings and assist with field surveys under supervision.

You will work with engineers and other technicians, perform calculations, manage data in GIS/GPS systems, and ensure documentation and compliance with Cal Water standards.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED equivalent.
• Valid California Class C Driver's License.
• Additional education or on-the-job experience in a related technical area.
• Proficiency in all job related software and hardware (CAD, surveying, EAM software, GPS, GIS).
• Properly prioritizes and documents work.
• Ability to communicate and maintain effective working relationships.
• Technical knowledge and ability to complete tasks.
• Completes essential tasks for the functional area.

Responsibilities

• Creates construction level drawings in CAD under supervision.
• Performs topographic surveys in the field with technicians.
• Revises standard drawings and details in CAD under guidance.
• Performs calculations (e.g., meter sizing, crossing depths) per guidelines.
• Researches existing infrastructure using databases, maps, drawings, photos, and paper files.
• Communicates with Cal Water staff across groups and districts to collect data and coordinate.

This is a junior level position in this classification series. Within the areas described in the primary job function, completes assignments with limited supervision. Technician proceeds on their own initiative with limited supervision in compliance with policies, practices, and procedures prescribed by immediate supervisor. This position can be located in Bakersfield, Chico, San Jose or Torrance, CA.

Essential Functions

• With direction from an engineer or supervisor, creates construction level drawings in CAD. Apply knowledge of regulatory and Cal Water standards in creation of drawings.
• Work with other technicians to complete topographic surveys in the field
• Under the guidance of an engineer or manager, revises standard drawings and details in CAD
• Performs calculations, such as meter sizing, crossing depths and preparation of forms for cost estimating, based on established guidelines.
• Conducts research on existing infrastructure using databases, maps, drawings, photos, and paper files, with support
• Communicate with Cal Water employees from other groups, departments, and districts to collect data, complete requests, and coordinate as necessary
• Operates a provided company vehicle for travel to field locations
• Participates in Continuous Improvement (CI) activities to improve all aspects of the Company's operations
• Responsible for personal safety at all times
• Properly documents work and maintain records in databases and paper files
• Performs arithmetic based on established guidelines
• Supports engineers, field staff and other technicians in completing field work
• Operates specific hardware such as large format printers and scanners
• Visits field sites to obtain data, measurements, and/or GPS coordinates
• Records Management
• Follows Cal Water standard procedures and processes to complete work
• Performs work on-site in the assigned office location
• Performs other duties as assigned as appropriate for the classification

Minimum Qualifications

• High school diploma or General Education Development (GED) equivalent.
• Valid California Class C Driver's License
• Additional education or on-the-job experience in a related technical area
• Proficiency in all job related software and hardware. This includes Computer-Aided Design Software, surveying equipment, Enterprise Asset Management Software, Global Positioning System devices, Geographic Information System software, etc.
• Properly prioritizes and documents work
• Ability to communicate and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
• Technical knowledge and ability needed to complete the job assignments
• Successfully completes all essential tasks for the functional area and level or demonstrates the capability to perform
