This position performs entry-level engineering work. Work involves job rotation, training and continuing education in design, construction, construction inspection, maintenance, surveying, environmental and transportation operations-related activities with the intent to actively pursue engineering licensing/registration through appropriate training and exams. Design activity is supervised by a licensed professional engineer who has authority for final approval of all projects. Work requires some contact with local governmental representatives, engineering contractors and private entities. Employees at this level perform assignments following specific instructions and are subject to frequent review by the immediate supervisor.
Essential Duties:
- Actively prepares for professional engineering licensing/registration through appropriate training and exams and completion/maintenance of required documentation.
- Applies engineering principles, methods, and techniques to a wide variety of transportation-related activities.
- Participates in Career Development for the Engineering Assistants program which includes job rotation, training, and continuing education.
- Performs engineering-related calculations and drafting/design work.
- Drives/travels to project/work locations to perform field investigations.
- Performs traffic analysis and data collection.
- Performs construction inspection and material sampling/testing.
- Prepares environmental assessments.
- Assist in creating plans, specifications, and estimates (PS&E).
- Uses automated roadway/structural or hydraulic design programs and computer-assisted design/engineering systems.
- Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.This position requires you to drive for TxDOT.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education: Bachelor's Degree in accordance with one of the conditions below:
- Degree in engineering technology which has been accredited by the Technology Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (TAC/ABET).
- Degree in mathematical, physical or engineering science.
- Degree in engineering which has not been accredited by the Technology Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (TAC/ABET).
Engineering Assistant I:
- Participation in EACDP. - Degree in engineering, engineering technology, mathematical, physical or engineering science.
Engineering Assistant II:
- Participation in EACDP. -Engineering in Training (EIT) Certificate - Degree in engineering, engineering technology, mathematical, physical or engineering scienceplus one (1) year engineering related experience.
Engineering Assistant III:
- Participation in EACDP. -Engineering in Training (EIT) Certificate - Degree in engineering, engineering technology, mathematical, physical or engineering scienceplus two (2) years engineering related experience OR passing Professional Engineer (PE) exam prior to obtaining requisite experience for gaining PE licensure and one (1) year engineering related experience.
Licenses and Certifications:
- Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
- Light work: Lift up to 20 lbs. at a time and frequently lift or carry objects 10 lbs. or more.

- Close Visual Acuity-work includes data/figures; view a computer screen; extensive reading
