Job summary

The Department of Transportation and Public Facilities, Central Region Construction & CIP Support, is seeking an Engineering Assistant 3 to support project engineers in supervising field work and on-site coordination in Anchorage.

The role involves field inspections, project documentation, materials testing, contractor pay estimates, and liaison with the Contracting Officer to uphold plans and standards while traveling within the state and sometimes outdoors in varied conditions.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in engineering, architecture or land surveying from ABET-accredited program with two years related experience.
• Or a non-ABET degree with an Engineer‑In‑Training (EIT) certificate or FE passing and two years related experience.
• Substitutions: four years of ABET-related education/experience may substitute for the degree.

The Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF), Central Region Construction & CIP Support, is looking for an Engineering Assistant 3 to help us Keep Alaska Moving!

What you will be doing:

In this position you will be working closely with our Construction Project Managers as the Project Engineer who leads other assigned staff with the administration of a construction project. The Project Engineer is the on‑site representative of the Contracting Officer, whose primary responsibility is to provide on‑site agency representation and maintain continuous inspection of contractor activities day and/or night. This responsibility requires the performance of necessary engineering functions, including field inspections, project documentation, materials testing, contractor pay estimates, as well as overseeing the Contractor's operations to ensure the work is in accordance with the plans, standards, and policies. In consultation with the supervisor, the Project Engineer is the primary liaison for the resolution of construction related issues and is expected to make equitable and timely decisions for the resolution of problems during construction. The Project Engineer must deal with the public and client agencies on project related matters. Overtime may be routinely required.

The working environment you can expect:

This position is permanently stationed in Anchorage but is generally assigned to a field construction team during the summer construction season. This position requires you to be outdoors, including inclement weather, in shifts up to 10 hours or more a day, and up to seven days a week, this may include weekends, holidays and nights. You will be around heavy equipment, dust, noise, etc. which will require the use of personal protective equipment. This job may also require you to travel to remote sites, by small airplane, boat and motor vehicle. Short‑term and long‑term travel may be required throughout the Central Region.

Bachelor's degree with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying from an institution accredited by ABET. AND Two years of engineering, architectural or land surveying experience of which one year was at the working or intermediate trainee level. The specific experience includes such work as an Engineering Assistant 2 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.

Or: A bachelor's degree with a major in a branch of engineering from an institution not accredited by ABET. AND An Engineer‑In‑Training (EIT) certificate issued by a state or the National Council of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors; or verification of passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination. AND Two years of engineering, architectural or land surveying experience of which one year was at the working or intermediate trainee level. The specific experience includes such work as an Engineering Assistant 2 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.

Substitutions:

Four years of any combination of ABET accredited postsecondary education in engineering, architecture, or land surveying (3 semester/4 quarter hours equal one month) and/or engineering, architectural or land surveying experience may substitute for the required degree. Graduate study in engineering or architecture may be substituted for the required experience (2 semester/3 quarter hours equal one month).
