Job description

RK&K is hiring a Junior to Mid-Level Water Resources Engineer to join our growing Virginia team, supporting projects across the state including those with Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and local municipalities.


Essential Functions


As a Water Resources Engineer at RK&K, you'll play a key role in the planning and design of civil infrastructure focused on water resources. You will support a variety of public sector projects throughout Virginia, including transportation and municipal stormwater systems.


Responsibilities include:



  • Perform drainage design for roadways, including culverts, storm sewers, and outfalls using VDOT and local standards

  • Develop drainage area maps, perform hydrologic calculations, and design stormwater conveyance systems

  • Design Stormwater Control Measures (SCMs) and Erosion & Sediment Control Best Management Practices (BMPs)

  • Conduct floodplain modeling and analysis using HEC-RAS to ensure FEMA compliance

  • Prepare stormwater management plans, reports, and engineering calculations

  • Produce construction drawings and specifications for permitting and bidding

  • Create environmental permit drawings and support regulatory compliance submissions

  • Utilize MicroStation and OpenRoads Designer (ORD) for stormwater and drainage plan production

  • Collaborate with transportation and utility design teams to develop integrated infrastructure solutions

  • Support field work, site assessments, and coordination with survey teams when necessary


Required Skills and Experience



  • Bachelor's degree from an ABET-accredited Civil or Environmental Engineering program

  • 0-5 years of relevant water resources engineering experience

  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification, or ability to obtain within one year

  • Strong foundation in hydrology, hydraulics, and stormwater design

  • Clear and concise verbal and written communication skills

  • Willingness to collaborate across disciplines

  • Ability to learn and apply MicroStation and other design software

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications


Preferred Skills and Experience



  • Experience with HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS, and related modeling software

  • Familiarity with VDOT Drainage Manual, standards, and plan development processes

  • Experience with OpenRoads Designer (ORD) or GEOPAK

  • Previous internship or professional experience supporting VDOT or Virginia municipalities
