Job summary

Zachry Group is seeking an Engineer VI to lead engineering and design for power plant upgrades, modifications, and new generation projects. The role requires deep knowledge of nuclear systems, standards, and licensing, with autonomy to drive technical solutions and project execution.

Based in Charlotte, NC, you will mentor engineers, interface with clients, and ensure quality across deliverables while advancing safety, reliability, and performance of plant operations.

Qualifications

  • Direct field experience supporting nuclear plant projects.
  • Experience with plant operating procedures, engineering processes, and licensing activities.

  • Lead engineering and design efforts for plant modifications, upgrades, and capital projects.

  • Develop specifications, modification packages, and design criteria documents.
  • Define project scope, technical requirements, and project deliverables.

The Engineer VI is responsible for leading engineering and design activities associated with power plant upgrades, plant modifications, and new generation projects. Position Summary

The Engineer VI is responsible for leading engineering and design activities associated with power plant upgrades, plant modifications, and new generation projects. This role requires extensive knowledge of power plant systems, structures, and components, as well as the ability to independently apply engineering principles, industry standards, and regulatory requirements. The successful candidate will lead technical evaluations, develop design solutions, manage project execution, and collaborate with clients and multidisciplinary engineering teams to improve plant performance, safety, reliability, and efficiency.

Technical Leadership & Engineering Design
  • Lead engineering and design efforts for plant modifications, upgrades, and capital projects.
  • Independently evaluate and apply engineering methods, standards, procedures, and design criteria.
  • Develop engineering specifications, modification packages, and design criteria documents.
  • Define project scope, technical requirements, and project deliverables.
  • Identify and select equipment, instrumentation, and system components.
  • Develop and evaluate system functionality and engineering solutions.
  • Resolve complex technical challenges using sound engineering judgment and industry best practices.
Nuclear Engineering & Regulatory Compliance
  • Ensure compliance with applicable nuclear industry codes, standards, and regulations.
  • Apply knowledge of NRC requirements, plant licensing, operating procedures, and nuclear processes.
  • Support safety-focused engineering evaluations and plant improvements.
  • Promote engineering quality and technical excellence throughout project execution.
Project Leadership & Execution
  • Manage project scope, schedule, budget, and quality objectives with minimal oversight.
  • Coordinate activities across engineering disciplines and project stakeholders.
  • Interface directly with clients, plant personnel, and leadership teams.
  • Drive project execution from concept development through implementation.
  • Develop innovative solutions to complex engineering and operational challenges.
Design Review & Quality Assurance
  • Review and approve engineering calculations, drawings, specifications, and technical documents.
  • Verify technical accuracy and compliance with project requirements.
  • Support design reviews, technical assessments, and quality assurance activities.
  • Ensure consistency and quality across engineering deliverables.
Team Leadership & Mentorship
  • Lead multidisciplinary engineering teams.
  • Provide technical oversight and guidance to junior and mid-level engineers.
  • Mentor developing engineers and support professional growth initiatives.
  • Foster collaboration and knowledge sharing across project teams.
Field & Client Support
  • Conduct plant walkdowns, field investigations, and equipment assessments.
  • Support installation, startup, testing, and troubleshooting activities.
  • Travel to client sites as needed to support project execution.
  • Serve as a trusted technical advisor to clients and project stakeholders.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
Education
  • Master's Degree in Engineering from an ABET/EAC-accredited program; OR
  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET/EAC-accredited program plus 15 years of relevant hands-on engineering experience.
Experience
  • Minimum 15 years of related engineering experience.
  • Direct field experience supporting nuclear plant projects.
  • Experience with plant operating procedures, engineering processes, and nuclear licensing activities.
Preferred Qualifications
Education
  • Master's Degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
Licensure
  • Professional Engineer (PE) License preferred.
