Duties Summary

The Engineer VI supervises the professional and nonprofessional personnel of a major engineering activity; develops procedures and standards for carrying out their specialty; represents the organization on technical engineering matters within the area of specialization; may direct a large engineering section or assist in directing a large engineering division or district office as a technical specialist in planning, development, design, and/or research; may lead a team engaged in difficult or critical project assignments; or serves as a staff specialist responsible for overall control and coordination of major and complex engineering projects or programs; and performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualification Requirements
  • Legal Authorization to Work: Applicants must be citizens, nationals, or permanent resident aliens of the United States, or eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment in the United States.
  • Professional License: Must possess a valid State of Hawaii Professional Engineer license at the time of application.
  • Basic Education: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four‑year college or university in engineering. Relevant substitutions apply as described in the Minimum Qualification Requirements.
  • Graduation within Three Months: Applicants who will graduate within three months and will meet the Minimum Qualification Requirements upon graduation may apply with a transcript and a verification letter from the department head or registrar.
  • Engineering Experience: Four (4) years of progressively responsible professional engineering experience, including at least one (1) year comparable to the Engineer V level.
  • Supervisory or Staff Advisory Experience: One (1) year of supervisory or staff advisory experience as specified in the Minimum Qualification Requirements.
  • Driver’s License: Some positions require a valid driver’s license.
  • Substitutions Allowed: Relevant substitutions apply as described in the Minimum Qualification Requirements.
