Job summary

Central Maine Power Co seeks an Engineer - Transmission Planning to provide specialized technical expertise in power system studies, modeling and development of the transmission system. The role requires experience with modeling, analyzing, and planning transmission lines and substation facilities in an electrical power system.

The candidate will lead reliability studies, analyze complex transmission systems, document results, and mentor the team while collaborating with internal and industry

Qualifications

• B.S. in Electrical Engineering or equivalent; 2-4 years experience OR 1 year with MS.
• PE license recommended.
• Transmission planning experience preferred.

Responsibilities

• Lead reliability studies including power flow, short circuit, stability analyses.
• Analyze complex transmission systems across voltage levels.
• Document results and present recommendations to stakeholders.
• Innovate to improve precision and efficiency of transmission planning.
• Mentor team and collaborate with internal and regional peers.
• Attend industry workshops and assist during storm restoration.

Base salary range: $87,600 - $109,500

Job Description

This role provides transmission focused specialized technical expertise in power system studies by carrying out assignments associated with the modeling and development of the transmission system. The role requires experience associated with modeling, analyzing, and planning level designs of transmission lines and substation facilities in an electrical power system.

Key Responsibilities

• Collaborate, perform, and lead reliability studies including power flow (thermal and voltage) analysis, transfer limit, short circuit, stability, and electromagnetic transient assessments.
• Analyze and assess complex transmission systems at numerous voltage levels.
• Document and communicate results and recommendations as appropriate including data review, report writing, and summary presentations.
• Continually strive to innovate and integrate improvements to increase the precision and efficiency of transmission planning.
• Strive to seek out and develop subject matter expert skills as necessary to mentor and support the team to aid in the advancement of business needs.
• Collaborate and interact with internal teams and industry peers on regional activities (e.g. NPCC, ISO-NE, etc.).
• Develop and apply a thorough understanding of various planning criteria, guidelines, standards (e.g. NERC, NPCC, etc.) and analysis software packages such as PSS/E, TARA, EnFuzion, ASPEN, PSCAD, Python.
• Participate in transmission and substation site inspections; attend industry workshops, training, and user group meetings as needs arise.
• Assist during storm restoration as assigned.

Technical Skills and Requirements

• Theoretical Engineering knowledge: Planning, Operations and Engineering Design, Analytics, Modeling & Calculation (e.g. sym. Components, per unit, etc.), Understanding the Business Model
• Practical Engineering Experience/Application: Planning, Operations and Engineering Design, Construction, (e.g. field experience, standardization, developing business case and defend in front of stakeholders)
• Engineering documentation: Ability to adequately document and interpret engineering documentation, review and approve engineering work done by others
• Knowledge of Regulatory and Compliance Environment: Local, State and Federal Regulatory Standards and Requirements (NERC, NPCC, ISO, MPUC, etc.)
• Functional Job Specific Competencies:
  1. Power System Studies - Knowledge & Interpretation of Study Assumptions and Results: (e.g. Power Flow, Stability, Short Circuit, etc.)
• Software Proficiency - Power System Analytics: (e.g. PSSE, TARA, ASPEN, PSCAD, EnFuzion, Python)

Education & Experience Requirements

• Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent; 2-4 years of industry related experience OR 1 year of industry related experience with an industry related Master’s degree; PE recommended
