Job summary

The New York State Office of Mental Health seeks an Engineer Trainee to support environmental compliance and capital operations at psychiatric facilities statewide.

Working under a Professional Engineer 2, the trainee will provide technical assistance on environmental engineering matters, oversee consultant resources, and ensure compliance with federal and state environmental regulations across OMH facilities.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in engineering or engineering technology (environmental, civil, mechanical, or related field).
• FE exam passed or one year of full-time experience in sanitary, public health, or environmental engineering.
• Knowledge of environmental compliance, permits, asbestos testing, hazardous waste handling, and water quality standards.
• Ability to travel statewide to all psychiatric center locations.
• Experience guiding consultants and facilities staff on environmental issues.

Job description

The New York State Office of Mental Health seeks an Engineer Trainee to support environmental compliance and capital operations at psychiatric facilities statewide. Working under a Professional Engineer 2, the trainee will provide technical assistance on environmental engineering matters, oversee consultant resources, and ensure compliance with federal and state environmental regulations across OMH facilities. This is a 24-month traineeship leading to Assistant Engineer (Environmental) upon successful completion and passage of the FE exam.

Key qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in engineering or engineering technology (environmental, civil, mechanical, or related field)
• Proof of passing the NCEES Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam OR one year full-time experience in sanitary, public health, or environmental engineering
• Knowledge of environmental compliance, permits, asbestos testing, hazardous waste handling, and water quality standards
• Ability to travel statewide to all psychiatric center locations
• Experience providing technical direction to consultants and guidance to facilities staff on environmental issues
