Job summary

REI Utility Services in Houston, TX is seeking an Engineer – Substation to design and modify power system protection schemes, prepare docs, and support commissioning across multiple projects.

The role requires strong engineering judgment, CAD and modeling skills, and ability to manage several tasks with moderate supervision. 2+ years in electric utility power engineering is preferred; FE/EIT is a plus; hybrid/remote work offered.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from an accredited program.
• FE or EIT certification is preferred.
• At least 2 years of electric utility or power engineering design experience.

Responsibilities

• Design substation protection schemes and specify relays for redundant systems.
• Prepare and review engineering drawings, specs, and calculations.
• Perform protective relay coordination studies and program relays.
• Conduct short-circuit analysis and develop relay settings.
• Provide technical guidance to contractors, clients, and engineers.
• Assist with commissioning and troubleshoot existing facilities.
• Analyze fault events and prepare sequence-of-events reports.
• Ensure designs comply with applicable codes, standards, and procedures.

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Engineer is responsible for independently designing and modifying power system protection and automation schemes, preparing engineering documentation, and supporting commissioning activities. This role requires professional judgment, technical expertise, and the ability to work on multiple projects with moderate supervision.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Design substation protection schemes and specify relays for use in redundant protection systems.
• Prepare and review engineering drawings, specifications, and calculations.
• Perform protective relay coordination studies and program substation relays.
• Conduct short-circuits analysis and develops relay settings for electromechanical and microprocessor relays.
• Provide technical guidance to contractors, clients, and other engineers.
• Assist with commissioning of new equipment and troubleshoot existing facilities.
• Analyze fault events and prepare sequence-of-events reports.
• Ensure all designs comply with applicable codes, standards, and company procedures.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

• Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from an accredited institution.
• Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) or Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification preferred.
• Minimum of 2 years of electric utility or power engineering experience performing engineering calculations and design work.

COMPENSATION

This is a full-time, exempt salaried position with an annual base salary range of $80,000 – $110,000, depending on experience and qualifications. The Engineer is eligible for performance-based bonuses paid biannually, subject to company policy and individual performance standards.
