Job summary

Barnes-Jewish Hospital, part of BJC HealthCare, seeks an experienced Boiler Operator to maintain and repair boiler systems across its facilities. You will operate stationary engines, boilers and related equipment, ensuring safe, reliable utilities for hospital buildings.

The role requires 5–10 years of boiler experience, a STL Stationary Engineer license, and a high school diploma or GED. Training will occur on day shift with rotation after completion.

Qualifications

  • Must have high school diploma or GED.
  • License as STL Stationary Engineer required.
  • 5–10 years of boiler/plant operations experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Operate boilers and auxiliary equipment, monitor gauges and control systems.
  • Perform routine maintenance: lubrication, filter changes, soot and corrosion removal.
  • Maintain logs of steam pressure, temperatures, water and fuel consumption.
  • Ensure safe operation within regulatory limits and respond to boiler incidents.
  • Document events in equipment log and report abnormalities.

Overview

Facilities Engineering maintains 6 million square foot of facilities dedicated to clinical and academic functions. Facilities Engineering is comprised of 150 professionals, including engineers, MEP mechanics, building finishes and support staff. The Facilities and Engineering department at Barnes Jewish Hospital is a progressive, innovative department which stresses employee involvement, continued education/training and opportunities for advancement. Preferred Qualifications
Role Purpose

Responsible for the operation, maintenance, renovation, and repair of the boiler systems by providing oversite and maintenance on stationary engines, boilers, and other mechanical equipment, that provide utilities for buildings. Conducts plant operations, skilled maintenance, repair, adjustments, and fabrication/installation work and maintains a clean, safe, well maintained boiler room and machine room.

Responsibilities
  • Notifies appropriate leadership in the event of equipment malfunction, boiler casualty, or any other unforeseen event that negatively impact the operation of the boiler plant or the hospital steam system.
  • Operates engines, boilers, and auxiliary equipment. Reads gauges, meters, and charts to track boiler operations. Monitors boiler water, chemical, and fuel levels. Activates valve to change the amount of water, air, and fuel in the boilers.
  • Performs routine maintenance to include lubricating moving parts, replace filters, and removes soot and corrosion. Tests and chemically treats hydronic systems to prevent corrosion and harmful deposits. Handles replacement of defective valves, gaskets, or bearings or performs a complete overhaul of defected parts when needed.
  • Ensures equipment operates safely and within established limits but performing regular restarts of equipment while monitoring meters, gauges, and computerized controls. Must adhere to St. Louis City Mechanical Ordinance #70800 which states in Section 111 that "high pressure steam boilers" shall be in the charge of an attending licensed stationary engineer whenever in operation. The city defines attending as being able to monitor and control the equipment at all times.
  • Keeps detailed records of relevant events and facts concerning operations and maintenance in an equipment log. Records steam pressure, temperature, water level, power output, and fuel consumption
