Job summary

At DTE Energy in Detroit, an intermediate engineer will independently evaluate, select and apply standard engineering techniques to support operation and maintenance of company assets. You will collaborate with field staff and other engineers, perform data analyses, build models, and present findings to management to drive improvements in reliability and efficiency.

A bachelor’s degree in engineering and 2+ years of relevant experience are required, with preference for substation, energy

Hybrid Role: This role is hybrid, with an established schedule of in-person work required at an assigned work location. Any remote work is expected to be performed from an employee’s primary residence, unless allowed (or prohibited) through the Company’s remote work guidelines.

Emergency Response: Yes – Must be available to perform a primary assignment in support of DTE’s emergency response to storms or other events that impact service to our customers.

Job Summary

Intermediate level engineer responsible for independently evaluating, selecting and applying standard engineering techniques, procedures and criteria. Uses judgement in applying or recommending adaptions and modifications. Typical assignments are in the areas of engineering or scientific design, problem solving, and technical support for the optimum operation and maintenance of company assets. Participates on teams of field employees, technicians, engineers and other personnel.

Key Accountabilities
  • Performs engineering assignments, proposing solutions to engineering related problems.
  • Works with experienced professionals to recommend and implement timely solutions involving routine engineering, design, operation, maintenance of company assets and market optimization.
  • Collaborates with more experienced engineers to provide follow‑up and engineering assistance on defined problems within time and budget constraints.
  • Develops models and analyzes data in order to recommend solutions and/or improvements in processes and programs; develops and presents presentations to all levels of management and/or external parties.
  • May provide field engineering assistance or technical support.
  • Keeps up to date on current technology and market/technology trends.
Minimum Education & Experience Requirements
  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or Engineering Technology and a minimum of 2 years of job relevant experience
Other Qualifications

Preferred

  • Experience supporting the design, construction, commissioning, operation, or maintenance of utility substations, battery energy storage or renewable energy facilities.
  • Working knowledge of applicable codes, standards, and compliance requirements, including UL, IEEE, NFPA, NEC, NERC, and utility interconnection requirements for inverter‑based resources.
  • Strong understanding of power system studies, including short circuit, load flow, reactive power, harmonics, transients, arc flash, and system modeling.
  • Proven experience reviewing contractor deliverables, including drawings, calculations, technical submittals, and RFIs, while ensuring compliance with project specifications during design and construction.
  • Familiarity with SCADA systems, RTACs, networking, and fiber optic communications.
  • FE or PE License Certification is a Plus
  • Master’s Degree in Engineering or job relevant discipline

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs, primarily Excel and Word

  • Proficient communication and interpersonal skills
