Qualifications

The Role

Designs, develops, and tests nuclear equipment and systems. Conducts research on new materials of special interest in nuclear reactors. Conducts studies related to the detection and control of radiation and radioactive contaminants. Studies nuclear fuel cycle to define most economical uses of material and safest means of waste products disposal. Other areas of research include radiation transport modeling, statistical analyses and performance metrics. Recommends various technology options or approaches for system, processes, facility or program improvements in terms of safety, performance, efficiency or costs.

Engineer Nuclear 4 - Should possess strong technical knowledge of DOT, NRC, and EPA regulations related to packaging, transportation and disposal of hazardous materials. Strong technical writing skills required as well as excellent verbal communication skills and the ability to discuss technical issues with various levels of management, project engineering, construction project, trades, contracts and pricing, contractors, government agencies, and Public SY representatives. The ability to interact with skilled technical trades by providing resolutions to a variety of deck plate encountered problems is essential. Possess proven problem solving skills and capable of assessing performance metrics to determine potential trends and program issues -- providing solutions to these issues and driving them to completion. Develops engineered documents directing the requirements for proper handling, managing, packaging, transport and disposal of hazardous materials. Maintain relationships with front-line Project and Trades supervision and trades workforce to facilitate the execution of work. Candidate must have a comprehensive knowledge of the Naval Nuclear Propulsion program, radiological controls, understanding of company business management principles, waste management services proposal development, contract execution, and have demonstrated the ability to manage projects as project lead. This role also includes; the review of work documents, engineering evaluations, and/or analyses to support assigned task, interpretation of regulatory requirements for implementation into waste management practices, prepare and maintain records/reports to meet regulatory and Program requirements, identify improvements to existing processes.

Must Have
  • Bachelor's Degree and 9 years of relevant exempt experience;
  • Master’s Degree and 7 years of relevant professional experience;
  • Ph.D. and 4 years of experience.
  • Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.
  • Experience in the interpretation and application of the 49 CFR requirements related to the classification, packaging, and shipment of hazardous materials.
  • Experience in the interpretation and application of the 40 CFR waste regulations.
  • Candidate must have a comprehensive knowledge of radiological waste, mixed waste, Radioactive/PCBs, hazardous, infectious, and industrial waste management, including extensive experience with Treatment, Storage, and Disposal Facility, waste sampling and characterization, demolition, regulatory interaction and compliance.
  • Proficiency in typical Microsoft software such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
Nice to Have
  • Completed Radiological Training for Nuclear Engineers and Radiation Worker qualifications and in-house waste management training.
  • Must currently have and be able to maintain a DOD security clearance.
