Job summary

General Dynamics Electric Boat in Groton, CT seeks an Engineer for the Test Equipment Development group. You will support test and evaluation programs for non‑nuclear ship systems, focusing on temporary fluid systems and deck‑plate support for VIRGINIA class builds.

You will collaborate with design and materials teams, perform engineering calculations, develop drawings, and provide rapid technical guidance to shipyard test organizations, with travel to QP and other facilities as needed.

Qualifications

• Bachelor of Science in Engineering or higher or related technical degree.
• 1–5 years of post-graduate engineering experience.
• Preferred: submarine design familiarity (non-nuclear ships systems).
• Experience using Teamcenter and the design process directives (DpD).
• Active DoD Secret Clearance preferred.
• GD&T – ASME Y14.5 knowledge.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with design and materials engineering teams to develop or update engineered drawings that align with test procedures and ship system requirements.
• Design and/or support the procurement of temporary support systems required to deliver temporary services to shipboard systems.
• Perform engineering calculations for temporary fluid systems and fixtures, including pressure, flow, and stress analyses, using Mathcad and other engineering software.
• Develop a broad understanding of shipboard systems to provide engineering support throughout all phases of construction.
• Provide technical guidance and rapid deck‑plate support to the shipyard test organization for resolving test issues at Groton and Quonset Point facilities.
• Prepare vendor requisitions (VREQs) and issue dispositions for vendor information requests (VIRs).
• Support emergent work with occasional extended hours and weekend availability.
• Travel as needed to QP and other facilities for testing and evolutions.

Job description

Overview

The Test Equipment Development group provides specialized engineering support for test and evaluation programs associated with non‑nuclear ship systems, including mechanical, hydraulic, and fluid system architectures, as well as selected steam plant subsystems. The group supports VIRGINIA Class submarine new construction—encompassing the VIRGINIA Payload Module (VPM) and Subsea and Seabed Warfare (SSW) capabilities and delivers engineering support across all overhaul, and repair (OH&R) programs.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Collaborate with design and materials engineering teams to develop or update engineered drawings that align with test procedures and ship system requirements, coordinating as needed with system engineers, trades, vendors, purchasing, program office personnel, and ship management.


• Design and/or support the procurement of temporary support systems required to deliver temporary services to shipboard systems.


• Perform engineering calculations for temporary fluid systems and fixtures, including pressure, flow, and stress analyses, using Mathcad and other engineering software.


• Develop a broad understanding of shipboard systems to provide engineering support throughout all phases of construction.


• Provide technical guidance and rapid deck‑plate support to the shipyard test organization for resolving test issues at Groton and Quonset Point (QP) facilities.


• Prepare vendor requisitions (VREQs) and issue dispositions for vendor information requests (VIRs) related to materials governed by the group’s drawings.


• Support emergent work that may require occasional extended hours and weekend availability.


• Travel as needed to QP and other facilities to support air flask testing and additional test evolutions.

Qualifications

Required:

• Bachelor of Science in Engineering or higher or related technical degree


• 1-5 years of post-graduate engineering experience

Preferred:

• General familiarity with submarine design with an emphasis on non-nuclear ships systems (HM&E piping systems).


• Experience using and navigating in Teamcenter and the design process directives (DpD) is a plus.


• Active DOD Secret Clearance


• GD&T – ASME Y14.5 knowledge
