Job summary

Tallgrass is seeking an early-career Mechanical Engineer to join the Project Engineering team in Houston. You will gain hands-on exposure to pipeline systems, pump and compressor stations, terminals, and mechanical facilities supporting major projects.

With 0–5 years of experience, you will contribute from concept through execution. The role requires CAD proficiency, attention to detail, and a proactive safety mindset, with up to 80% travel and field collaboration as needed.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from an accredited institution.
• 0 to 5 years of mechanical engineering experience (internships or co-ops in oil & gas are a plus).
• Familiarity with mechanical equipment used in pipeline or terminal operations.
• Working knowledge of CAD and engineering analysis tools.

Responsibilities

• Support the design, specification, and analysis of mechanical systems, including pipelines, pumps, valves, pressure vessels, and rotating equipment.
• Assist in project execution from feasibility and front-end engineering to construction support and commissioning.
• Perform calculations, material selection, and mechanical integrity assessments.
• Work closely with project managers, field personnel, and vendors to ensure technical accuracy and safety compliance.
• Participate in inspections, failure analysis, and reliability improvements of mechanical systems.
• Prepare engineering deliverables such as datasheets, reports, and drawing reviews.
• Ensure designs meet industry standards (ASME, API, DOT, etc.) and internal specifications.

This role offers hands-on exposure to pipeline systems, pump and compressor stations, terminals, and mechanical facilities supporting Major projects. Candidates with 0 to 5 years of experience will thrive in this position by contributing to a wide variety of projects from concept through execution.

Responsibilities

Position Responsibility

• Support the design, specification, and analysis of mechanical systems, including pipelines, pumps, valves, pressure vessels, and rotating equipment
• Assist in project execution, from feasibility and front-end engineering to construction support and commissioning
• Perform calculations, material selection, and mechanical integrity assessments
• Work closely with project managers, field personnel, and vendors to ensure technical accuracy and safety compliance
• Participate in inspections, failure analysis, and reliability improvements of mechanical systems
• Prepare engineering deliverables such as datasheets, reports, and drawing reviews
• Ensure designs meet industry standards (ASME, API, DOT, etc.) and internal specifications
• Follows prescribed procedures and conducts analyses to develop design options or recommendations.
• Will work non-traditional hours as needed.
• This role will include up to 80% travel.

Qualifications

MinimumRequirements:

Education:

• Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from an accredited institution in Engineering or a related field.
• 0 to 5 years of mechanical engineering experience (internships or co-ops in oil & gas are a plus)
• Familiarity with mechanical equipment used in pipeline or terminal operations
• Working knowledge of CAD and engineering analysis tools
• Strong attention to detail, safety awareness, and a proactive mindset
• Ability to work in both office and field environments as needed

Experience/Specific Knowledge (not required):

• Exposure to midstream project work or operations support
• Experience with pump or compressor station design
• Root cause analysis or mechanical integrity experience

Certifications, Licenses & Registrations:

• Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and a driving record satisfactory to the company and its insurers (for travel).
• Knowledge of basic Engineering principles
• Works under direct supervision but displays initiative and moves toward requiring less supervision.
• Must be able to perform all essential and marginal functions of the job.
• Must be able to work with a team, take direction from management, adhere to required work schedules, focus attention on details, and follow work rules.
• Ability to successfully perform multiple tasks with strict deadlines.
