Position Overview

Three Notch Group is seeking an Engineer IV to serve as the senior technical and client leader for our Civil Site Practice in Charlotte, North Carolina. This role will build and maintain trusted relationships with North Carolina clients, lead the delivery of high-quality and constructable engineering documents, and develop the technical staff needed to support client and regional growth.

The ideal candidate is an experienced civil and site-development engineer and North Carolina-registered Professional Engineer who combines technical leadership, project management, client service, business development, and staff mentorship. This position will exercise independent judgment on complex technical, staffing, and client matters while collaborating with practice and regional leadership.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Serve as a primary point of contact for clients and build long-term relationships grounded in responsive service and trust.
  • Attend client and public meetings, including occasional evening meetings.
  • Support business development in North Carolina by identifying opportunities, meeting with existing and prospective clients, and assisting with proposals and statements of qualifications.
  • Represent Three Notch Group in professional and community organizations to strengthen the firm’s presence in the region.
  • Direct and review computer-aided engineering and design work used to prepare engineering plans, reports, computations, design documents, and quantity estimates.
  • Lead the preparation and modification of reports, specifications, plans, construction documents, studies, permits, and designs for site-development and municipal projects.
  • Participate in project quality assurance and quality control in accordance with applicable practice and project quality-control plans.
  • Assist with construction-phase management and observation in accordance with contract documents.
  • Define complex problems, collect and evaluate data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Read, analyze, and interpret engineering and construction documents, professional publications, technical procedures, and governmental regulations.
  • Develop or assist with opinions of probable construction cost and recommend design or development changes that improve project quality.
  • Exercise independent judgment on technical, staffing, and client matters while coordinating with the Practice Leader and regional leadership as appropriate.
  • Prepare or assist with project scopes of work, fee estimates, schedules, and other required deliverables.
  • Lead complex projects involving specialized skills and multidisciplinary teams while communicating with project teams to maintain budget and schedule milestones.
  • Manage time and assignments efficiently to achieve quality, schedule, budget, direct-labor, and other position-specific financial goals.
  • Mentor and develop engineers and technical staff, supporting their progress toward professional licensure and leadership roles.
  • Participate in professional activities and assigned development opportunities, maintain required continuing education and licensure, follow company policies and procedures, and perform other duties as assigned.

Success in this role means serving as a trusted senior technical and client leader who delivers constructable, high-quality site-development and municipal projects within established scope, schedule, budget, and quality expectations. The Engineer IV will strengthen relationships with North Carolina clients, guide complex multidisciplinary work, make sound technical and staffing decisions, and communicate effectively with clients, project teams, and company leadership.

The successful Engineer IV will expand the Civil Site Practice’s presence in the region through excellent project delivery, client service, professional engagement, and business development support. They will also build team capability by mentoring engineers and technical staff, supporting licensure and leadership development, maintaining professional credentials, and identifying the expertise needed to meet evolving client needs.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering with 10 or more years of experience.
  • At least five years of experience serving North Carolina clients, including cities, counties, water or sewer boards, or utility authorities.
  • Experience designing and permitting site-development projects, including site plans, erosion-control plans, grading, stormwater systems, and utility design.
  • Experience supporting municipal clients with flood permitting, hydrologic and hydraulic modeling, and resiliency design.
  • Demonstrated experience managing engineering projects, project teams, and client relationships; experience leading an office group or team is preferred.
  • Current registration as a Professional Engineer in North Carolina is required.
  • Working knowledge of NCDEQ permitting and funding programs and local-government approval processes is preferred.
  • Established relationships with municipal clients in the region and a demonstrated record of business development are preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel regularly to local client and project sites, with occasional overnight travel.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Basic proficiency with AutoCAD, Civil 3D, and stormwater-modeling software.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
  • Ability to sit and work at a computer for prolonged periods and perform the seeing, hearing, talking, standing, stooping, bending, walking, reading, writing, and reaching required for the role.
  • Ability to lift 25 pounds or more and work extended hours when needed.
  • Ability to work primarily in an office environment and occasionally at construction sites or in outdoor weather conditions where noise levels may be loud.
