Job summary

Los Alamos National Laboratory's Plutonium Facilities Engineering Division seeks motivated students to contribute engineering work in a nuclear facility environment in Los Alamos, NM. The position is 100% on-site and requires current enrollment in an accredited engineering bachelor's program and adherence to the Laboratory's safety and drug-testing policies.

Eligible candidates must maintain a 3.0 GPA, register for at least 12 credits each semester, and pass a new-employment drug test.

Qualifications

• Currently enrolled in an accredited bachelor's degree program in any engineering discipline (Electrical, Nuclear, Mechanical, Fire Protection engineering favored).
• Enrolled in and successfully complete a minimum of 12 undergraduate credit hours per semester (or equivalent).
• Have and maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on 4.0 scale. Official transcripts required annually.

Responsibilities

• General Physical Mobility: standing, walking, climbing stairs, bending.
• Use of both hands/arms/legs/feet; may lift up to 20 pounds.
• Work in a noisy environment; near sources of ionizing and non-ionizing radiation; near machinery with moving parts; overtime or irregular schedule.

The Plutonium Facilities Engineering (PFE) Division of Los Alamos National Laboratory develops, maintains, and applies a diverse set of engineering capabilities to provide innovative engineering solutions that enable the Laboratory's scientific and national security mission. Successful candidates will be performing work in a Nuclear Facility.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

• Currently enrolled in an accredited bachelor's degree program in any engineering discipline. Engineering degrees in greatest demand include Electrical, Nuclear, Mechanical and Fire Protection Engineering.
• Enrolled in and successfully complete a minimum of 12 undergraduate credit hours per semester (or equivalent of full-time enrollment).
• Have and maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on 4.0 scale. Note: Students must provide the program coordinator with current, official transcripts annually to remain eligible. See the Annual Transcript & Salary Review Process section for additional information.
• Pass a new employment drug test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q

(Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance, and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test

The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
