Job summary

Cowan Group Engineering (CGE) is seeking a motivated Engineer Intern I to build a strong civil engineering foundation through hands-on design and project delivery in transportation, water and site development.

In this role you will work alongside experienced engineers on real-world infrastructure and development projects, contributing to design from early concepts through final plans and construction support.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from ABET-accredited university by the start date.
  • Passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination is strongly preferred.
  • Engineer Intern (EI) certification required for EI I classification.
  • 1–3 years of related engineering experience preferred.
  • Basic knowledge of Civil 3D and/or OpenRoads.
  • Strong mathematical, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to read and understand engineering plans and specifications.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with conceptual and final engineering design and construction plan prep.
  • Perform engineering calculations and analyze data per codes and standards.
  • Conduct site visits and gather project and field information.
  • Develop design sketches and project elements for review by engineers.
  • Address review comments from clients, agencies, and others.
  • Prepare quantity calculations, cost estimates, specs, bid items, and docs.
  • Coordinate with project team and subconsultants.
  • Review work for accuracy, quality, and compliance with requirements.
  • Support drawings, plats, maps, easements, cross sections, and exhibits.

Overview

Cowan Group Engineering (CGE) is seeking a motivated Engineer Intern I ready to build a strong foundation in civil engineering through hands-on design and project delivery. Opportunities are available in transportation, water/wastewater, and site planning and development. In this role, you will work alongside experienced engineers and project managers on real-world infrastructure and development projects, contributing to design from early concepts through final plans and construction support. You will perform meaningful technical work, participate in site visits, coordinate with project teams, and take on increasing responsibility as your skills grow. This position offers a strong opportunity to develop your design capabilities, understand the full project lifecycle, and build toward greater project responsibility and professional licensure at CGE.

What You’ll Do
  • Assist with conceptual and final engineering design and preparation of construction plans.
  • Perform engineering calculations and analyze technical design data using applicable codes, standards, and design software.
  • Conduct site visits and gather project and field information.
  • Develop design sketches and project elements for review by a Project Engineer or Project Manager.
  • Address review comments from clients, agencies, and other reviewing parties.
  • Prepare quantity calculations, construction cost estimates, technical specifications, bid items, and project documentation.
  • Prepare documents required by regulatory and funding agencies.
  • Coordinate with Project Managers, Project Engineers, subconsultants, and other members of the project team.
  • Review work for accuracy, quality, and compliance with project requirements.
  • Support preparation of drawings, plats, maps, easements, cross sections, and other engineering exhibits.

Job Requirements

Who We're Looking For
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from an ABET-accredited university by the position start date.
  • Passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination is strongly preferred. The FE may be completed before graduation.
  • Engineer Intern (EI) certification is required for classification as Engineer Intern I. Candidates who have passed the FE and are awaiting graduation, a final transcript, or completion of the EI certification process are encouraged to apply and may be classified as an Engineering Graduate until EI certification is received.
  • One to three years of related engineering experience preferred.
  • Basic knowledge of Civil 3D and/or OpenRoads.
  • Strong mathematical, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to read and understand engineering plans and specifications.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Attention to detail, organization, and ability to manage assignments and meet project deadlines.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with Project Managers, Project Engineers, and other team members.
