Job description

Under limited supervision, this 24 HR shift work engineer position performs engineering duties and fire prevention activities on assigned shifts. Responds to emergency situations as required, providing assistance to superiors in controlling fire scenes or performing other specialized duties as assigned. Performs the necessary functions and operations of an engineer to efficiently and effectively protect the lives and property of those in need of assistance. Reports to the Department Chief, Department Deputy Chief, Battalion Chief, Captain, and Lancaster County Fire Rescue Director.

Operating Fire Apparatus

Driving the fire truck, ladder truck, or other emergency vehicle to the scene of a fire or other emergency. Ensuring the safe and efficient operation of the vehicle at the scene. Maintaining awareness of road conditions and traffic while driving with emergency lights and sirens.

Firefighting Operations

Setting up hoses, ladders, and other equipment to fight fires. Operating the fire truck's pump to deliver water or other firefighting agents. Participating in firefighting activities as directed by the fire captain. Providing medical assistance to victims at the scene, if qualified as an Emergency First Responder or EMT.

Equipment Maintenance

Performing daily inspections of the assigned fire apparatus to ensure it's in proper working order. Cleaning and maintaining fire hoses, tools, and other equipment. Performing minor repairs on the fire apparatus and equipment. Reporting any mechanical problems or maintenance needs to superiors.

Fire engineers may also be involved in fire prevention activities, public education programs, and station maintenance duties. They are expected to participate in ongoing training to stay up-to-date on pump operation techniques, firefighting techniques, and emergency procedures.

Candidates must possess a valid South Carolina Commercial Driver’s License with tanker endorsement or a SC Class E commercial license or any state that is equivalent to SC Class E License. IN-HOUSE: Any disciplinary action above a counseling form within the past six months will rule a candidate ineligible for consideration for promotion. If no candidate has all eligibility requirements, the most qualified candidates will be interviewed, and the successful candidate must complete all required training before ending the probationary status. Firefighter I & II, Hazardous Materials Operations, ICS 100, 200, 300, 700 & 800 (Obtain ICS 300 by May 1, 2026), Emergency Vehicle Driver Training (EVDT), Pump Ops I and II (Obtained by May 1, 2026), Aerial Ops (Obtained by May 1, 2026), Lancaster County Medical First Responder or higher certification, Fire Officer I (Obtained by May 1, 2026), Instructor I (Obtained by May 1, 2026), and Career Firefighter: This refers to a firefighter who has worked in a career fire department and is scheduled for at least 2080 hours a year.

Minimum Qualifications or Standards Required

Required: You must have a high school diploma, GED, or equivalent. You must submit certified fire service certification transcripts. You must have ICS; 100, 200, 700, and 800. You must have NFPA Firefighter level II and Hazardous Materials operations or equivalent and two 16-hour South Carolina Fire Academy Officer classes within two years of your hired or promoted date. You must have two years of certified Interior Firefighter II with a career department. You must have Lancaster County First Responder, EMT, or equivalent within the first twelve months. You must be physically able to operate a variety of machines and equipment including a fire engine, vehicles, firefighting equipment, computer, basic office equipment, telephone/radio, or other duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements

You must be able to remain on your feet for long periods of time, withstand uncomfortable and/or dangerous physical conditions at fire scenes, and perform manual tasks. You must be able to exert up to twenty pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, or pull. You must be able to lift, position, and/or carry weights of up to 200 pounds. You must be able to pass the annual Department physical examination and be certified by a physician for interior structural firefighting.
