Job summary

Duke Energy is seeking an Engineer III or Senior Engineer for the Protection and Control Engineering group in Raleigh, NC. You will design protection and control relaying applications for substations, developing detailed plans, enclosures, schematics and wiring diagrams for various voltage levels from 23kV to 500kV.

You must have a BS in Engineering (ABET) with 4+ years experience; Senior level requires PE registration.

Qualifications

  • Requires BS in engineering from ABET-accredited program; PE required at Senior level; Master's considered in lieu of BS.
  • Minimum 4 years engineering experience for Engineer III; at least 6 years or 5 years with PE for Senior Engineer.

Responsibilities

This posting is for one position. Dependent on relevant experience, the level to which a candidate is aligned is outlined below.

This position is part of the Protection and Control Engineering group located in the Duke Energy Progress headquarters in downtown Raleigh, NC.

This work group is responsible for the design of protection and control relaying applications for substations (new and existing). Design projects range from routine equipment modifications and installations, to the complete design of new transmission facilities.

The person in this position will work as part of a project team to develop detailed project scopes, layouts of control equipment enclosures, detailed elementary, schematic and wiring diagram drawings and plans required for construction of specific substation projects. The work performed by this unit requires an understanding of power systems, transformers, protective relaying and electrical engineering principles. The person will be involved in the development and review of designs for high voltage substations at voltages of 23kV, 115kV, 230kV and 500kV. Additionally, the person in this position is expected to develop expertise in protective relay settings calculations and analysis based on current and evolving standards (IEEE, NERC, etc.). The person in this position must be able to manage multiple projects in various stages of design so as to meet project schedule deadlines; provide design support to field personnel during project implementation; develop and maintain sufficient level of expertise in use of CAD software for efficient production of engineering work; and collaborate in a team environment to spread knowledge and to produce the best quality product possible.

Responsibilities
  • Develops detailed project scopes, layouts of control equipment enclosures, detailed elementary, schematic and wiring diagram drawings and plans required for construction of specific substation projects.
  • Coordinates work to manage multiple projects simultaneously to ensure timely release of engineering designs.
  • Utilizes a variety of tools and techniques in order to complete an engineering design, including current design specifications, pertinent code manuals, computer aided design/drafting software, and other reference sources.
  • Produces engineering release packages consisting of pertinent drawings and bills of material and associated relay setting files and documentation.
  • Provides engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis and resolution of problems of increasing scope and complexity in both inside as well as outside the scope of typical responsibility.
  • Ensures accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling and monitoring of work activities; decisions may affect the operations or results of the work group and may have some impact on major projects or department results.
  • Prepares thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations and sketches related to defined problems and analysis of increasing scope and complexity.
  • Conducts engineering and related studies; completes non-routine engineering projects with minimal oversight with the ability to independently manage project schedules and interfaces; competent to design, operate and maintain systems with moderate impact on existing systems.
  • Possesses and applies the fundamental concepts, practices and procedures; proficient in technical and analytical competencies necessary to handle assignments of increasing complexity.
  • Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities.
  • Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Maintains accurate records and files.
  • Supports the company's goals and represents the company positively and professionally.
Basic / Required Qualifications
  • Engineer III: Graduation from a four-year college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program. A Master's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of the B. S. engineering degree. Minimum of 4 years engineering experience.
  • Senior Engineer: Graduation from a four-year college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program or state registration as a Professional Engineer. A Master's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of the B. S. engineering degree. Minimum of 6 years of engineering experience or 5 years of engineering experience with state registration as a Professional Engineer.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Electrical Engineering degree preferred - the concepts of protection schemes requires an understanding of symmetrical components and energy flow calculations.
  • 10 plus years engineering experience preferred.
  • Familiarity with electromechanical, solid-state, and microprocessor-based relaying.
  • Familiarity with relay protection schemes and relay logic.
  • Experience with relay settings calculations for protective relays from Protection & Control designs specifically settings for line, autobank transformers, transformers, bus, capacitor bank for both transmission & distribution class equipment.
  • Interpret and develop relay logic used with microprocessor-based relays.
  • Interpretation of relay documents and Protection & Control design drawings.
  • Interpretation and compliance with all applicable NERC (PRC-006, PRC-012, PRC-023, PRC-025, PRC-027, CIP-002, and CIP-10) and FRCC regulations.
  • Experience with power system modeling and relay coordination studies using Aspen One-Liner software.
  • Familiarity with protection system components, such as relays, carrier sets, RTU, instrument transformers, and DC systems.
  • Demonstrates good understanding of electric utility protection and control standards and the ability to produce construction documents.
  • Demonstrates proficiency with engineering computer packages – MicroStation, and/or AutoCAD, Inventor, AutoCAD Electrical.
  • Additional Preferred Requirements: Demonstrates ability to quickly grasp new techniques, deal with rapid changes in priorities, and remain calm and effective in stressful situations.
  • Demonstrates ability to meet required deadlines while simultaneously completing other tasks.
  • Demonstrates ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with peers, partners, customers, and the public by adapting to various personality styles in a professional manner.
  • Experience and demonstrates written and oral communications skills, including the ability to present information, facilitate meetings and provide direction to others.
  • Ability to deal with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Understanding of basic principles of project management.
Specific Requirements
  • Must have obtained Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program.
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer is required at the Senior level by Transmission.
  • A Master's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree.
Working Conditions
  • Hybrid – Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees should live within a reasonable commute to their designated Duke Energy facility.
  • Normal job functions are performed on a Monday through Friday schedule with some system travel required and must be available for call-out and work during system emergencies.
  • Travel Requirements: 5-15%.
