What you’ll be doing…

The Engineer III Spec-Interconnect provides technical guidance, end-to-end project management, and operational execution for Verizon’s national transport network infrastructure. This role focuses on the lifecycle management, capacity expansion, and port utilization of Network-to-Network Interfaces (NNI) and Access leaf interconnects across the national footprint.
The position serves as the critical bridge between regional RF/transport teams, third-party competitive local exchange carriers (CLECs)/incumbent local exchange carriers (ILECs), and Verizon’s national core switching centers to ensure robust, low-latency Ethernet Backhaul (EBH).

  • Coordinating a wide variety of project teams focused on different aspects of the network deployment and keeping them on task to meet deadlines.

  • Utilizing Fuse project tracking tools and systems to accurately document milestones and keep them on track.

  • Proficient in CND design and ASR ordering

  • Developing and implementing corrective action plans to mitigate impact to project schedules and overall business objectives.

  • Creating weekly program content and giving presentations that helps to drive decision making for our Director and VP teams.

  • Develop and execute technical engineering plans to add, augment, and groom NNI capacity and peering cross-connects nationally.

  • Actively monitor, audit, and analyze Access leaf port utilization across switching centers and hubs to anticipate exhaust points and initiate port-expansion orders.

  • Create and manage end-to-end transport projects from preliminary routing design through circuit delivery, provisioning, testing, and operational handover.

  • Generate and cut purchase orders (POs), review capital quotes against contract rates, track project expenditures, and hold third-party fiber and backhaul vendors accountable to project milestones and Service Level Agreements (SLAs).

  • Maintain, design, and update network schematics, low-level routing topologies, interconnect cross-connect layouts, and floor/rack elevation drawings.

  • Model and forecast bandwidth demands across Verizon’s backhaul networks driven by 5G Ultra Wideband rollouts, cell densification, and macro-site upgrades.

  • Coordinate and validate Layer 1 through Layer 3 acceptance testing (including dark fiber OTDR trace analysis, optical power levels, RFC 2544, and Y.1564 standards) and resolve provisioning defects.

What we’re looking for…

You’ll need to have:

  • Bachelor’s degree or three or more years of work experience.

  • Three or more years or relevant work experience.

  • Expertise in Ethernet Backhaul (EBH) architecture, IP RAN transport, and cell site routing (CSR).

  • Advanced proficiency with Google Workspace (Sheets, Docs, Slides, Drive) and technical diagramming tools (Visio, AutoCAD, or equivalent).

Even better if you have one or more of the following:

  • Minimum of 5 years in telecommunications or cellular wireless engineering with direct focus on Transport, Backhaul, or Interconnect engineering. And/or military experience.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Telecommunications, Computer Science, or equivalent practical industry experience.

  • Ability to align goals across regional RF engineers, Submarket Transport Leads, Network Assurance, and National Core Operations without escalation friction.

  • Proven record of making sound technical judgments and prioritizing emergency capacity projects under aggressive target deadlines.

  • Strong negotiation and escalation skills when driving transport vendors (e.g., Crown Castle, Zayo, Lumen, SCE, local telcos) to meet committed delivery dates.

  • Practical proficiency leveraging modern generative AI tools and large language models (such as Google Gemini, and Claude) synthesize transport utilization data, draft and review technical engineering documentation, automate routine reporting, and accelerate root-cause troubleshooting.

  • Working knowledge of cellular wireless topologies (5G NR, LTE, Baseband Units, Open RAN, and packet transport networks). Familiarity with carrier Interconnection Agreements (ICA), carrier tariffs, local access charges, and meet-point architectures.

  • Fiber transport expertise: CWDM/DWDM, dark fiber networks, splice/patch panel mapping, and fiber acceptance criteria.

  • Hands-on experience working with Verizon’s proprietary inventory and circuit tracking system.

  • Working knowledge of SevOne, Iris, and proprietary EBH reporting platforms to track port traffic and latency.

  • Experience issuing POs and tracking milestones in platforms like 1ERP/SAP or Fuze.
