Job summary

The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) is seeking a Design Engineer II to lead roadway design activities for Division 8 Project Development. Qualifications

This posting is for an Engineer II position that will serve as a Design Engineer for Division 8 Project Development – Division Design/Construct Unit located in the Carthage Division Office.

The Design Engineer II will lead in the production of roadway design plans utilizing Open Road Designer (ORD), creating construction documents, and creating estimates.

The Design Engineer will also design and review erosion control, hydraulics, pavement marking and roadway plans from inception through final construction in accordance with NCDOT policy manuals, standards and specifications.

The Design Engineer II will also assist with the development and delivery of the Highway Maintenance Improvement Program (HMIP) and Roadway Maintenance Improvement Program (RMIP) by providing support and supervision of those projects through reviewing estimates and packages needed for contract work to ensure effective program delivery as directed by the Division Design/Construct Engineer.

Primary Duties

Primary Duties will be the development of roadway contract plans and documents using CAD Design through Open Roads Designer (ORD). Duties also include experience in developing horizontal and vertical alignments and cross-sections. Provide support in road and treatment selection utilizing field reviews and PMS data through the Go!NC platform for concrete and asphalt pavements to help develop priorities for the Highway Maintenance Improvement Program and the Road Maintenance Improvement Program. Utilizing field assessments, aerial photograph, GIS data, PMS data, MicroStation, OpenRoads and NC Resurfacing Estimate Program to prepare and/or review resurfacing and asphalt surface treatment plans, quantities, and estimates. Publish monthly the 36-month letting schedule for resurfacing and pavement preservation projects. Enter contracts into HMIP database. Coordinate monthly with the Residents' Offices to update roads treated in the HMIP. Work with Resident Engineers' offices to identify current contracting issues and adjust future contracts to maximize future Pavement Condition Scores. Perform related duties as required by Division Management.

Selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle.

Registration as a Professional Engineer by the NC Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors preferred.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Salary Grade and Salary Range: NC18 $63,927 - $111,871

Management prefers applicants with the following:
  • Experience in the oversite of subordinate Engineers and Technicians
  • Experience in the use of professional engineering principles and practices to troubleshoot and solve roadway design challenges
  • Experience and knowledge of the GIS system
  • Working knowledge and skill in the use of computer equipment, software such as MicroStation, Geopak, and OpenRoads, and mathematical functions
  • Customer service experience related to resolving problems that involve explaining engineering concepts to various customer groups
Minimum Education and Experience
