Job summary

Progress Rail, A Caterpillar Company in Illinois is seeking an engineering professional to contribute to design, development, and manufacturing of rail products. You will perform prototype testing, troubleshooting, and data analysis to improve engine components.

The role requires a BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering with relevant experience and a strong foundation in mechanics, thermodynamics and manufacturing techniques.

Qualifications

  • BS in Mechanical Engineering with 2+ years of experience or MS with 1+ years of experience.
  • Theoretical and applied mechanics, vibrations, fluids, metallurgy, electricity, thermodynamics, heat transfer, and manufacturing techniques.
  • Training in computer applications.

Responsibilities

  • Develop prototype testing and validation of engine components.
  • Perform engine troubleshooting, data collection and failure analysis.
  • Implement engineering changes.
  • Initiate documents to provide engineering authority and maintain math data.
  • Develop solutions for engineering related product problems (Root Cause).
  • Provide technical directions to support personnel.
  • Work with engineering functions, suppliers and plant personnel to implement cost reduction and product improvements.
  • Coordinate and consult with other departments outside engineering such as manufacturing.
  • Travel as required.

Education / Training
  • BS in Mechanical Engineering with 2+ years of experience or MS in Mechanical Engineering with 1+ years of relevant experience
  • Training in college level theoretical and applied mechanics, vibrations, fluid dynamics, metallurgy, electricity, thermodynamics, heat transfer, and manufacturing techniques;
  • Training in computer applications;

  • High level of analytical ability where problems are unusual and difficult;
  • Understanding of engineering theory and principles of design;
  • Good oral and written communication skills;
  • High level of interpersonal skills to work effectively with others;
  • Understanding of design and manufacturing processes;
  • Ability to work independently and with others;
  • Knowledge of computer engineering software.
Preferred
  • Experience in working with diesel engines
  • Previous experience in engine component failure analysis and testing desirable
  • Knowledge and experience in Valve train simulation and test data analysis.
