Job summary

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited program. A master’s degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. engineering degree.
  • 2 years minimum required engineering experience.

Responsibilities

  • Protection Engineer Responsibilities: Perform Protection Calculations and Coordination to protect the grid; Maintain Relay Database for Midwest Relay assets and settings; Support compliance activities related to relay setting and coordination; Interface with Relay Technicians to support install and commissioning of settings; Conduct studies and coordinate changes via meetings; Maintain accurate records and files; Support company goals and represent the company positively.

These positions may be filled as an Engineer I or one level higher as an Engineer II.



This job posting is for Transmission Protection Settings or Controls Engineers to support substation projects across the Duke Energy Indiana Territory.



The Protection & Controls (P&C) Engineer is responsible for the design, development, implementation, and support of protection, control, SCADA, and automation systems associated with Duke Energy's transmission substations and switchyards.



This role provides engineering support for capital, maintenance, emergent, and grid modernization projects throughout the transmission system.



The successful candidate will work as part of a multidisciplinary engineering team supporting projects from concept development through design, construction, commissioning, and closeout.



The role will include assignments in either protection engineering or controls engineering.



The Engineer I position solves problems in engineering areas of specialization with close supervision.



An Engineer I is expected to develop skills, and the ability to work with greater independence.



An Engineer I has knowledge of fundamental concepts and procedures.



The Engineer II position solves complex problems in engineering areas of specialization with general supervision.



An Engineer II is expected to develop advanced skills, and the ability to work with greater independence.



An Engineer II effectively applies fundamental concepts and procedures to work that is complex and varied.



Primary Responsibilities


Protection Engineer Responsibilities


  • Perform Protection Calculations and Coordination to protect the grid

  • Maintain Relay Database for Midwest Relay assets and settings

  • Support compliance activities related to relay setting and coordination

  • Interface with Relay Technicians to support install and commissioning of settings

  • Conduct engineering and related studies; expected to engage in frequent working group phone calls and face‑to‑face meetings to coordinate and implement changes as a result of fleet and recognize industry best practices

  • Strive to continually improve job‑related, technical and professional knowledge, skills and performance

  • Develop positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities

  • Demonstrate effective verbal and written communication skills

  • Maintain accurate records and files

  • Supports the company's goals and represents the company positively and professionally



Controls Engineer Responsibilities


  • Develop complete control system designs for transmission substations and switching stations

  • Develop and update schematic drawings, wiring diagrams, panel layouts

  • Perform AC and DC system calculations

  • Provide technical support for field troubleshooting and commissioning activities

  • Learn company standards and design practices for transmission control systems

  • Coordinate with internal and external stakeholders to ensure accuracy of project design

  • Identify opportunities to improve standard control designs and engineering processes

  • Manage project engineering timeline and quality steps

  • Demonstrate effective verbal and written communication skills



Basic Required Qualifications – Engineer I

Working Conditions

Travel may be needed for face‑to‑face interactions with engineering and relay field personnel.


Expectation to be hands on in lab environment with protection and SCADA based devices for template development, testing, and debugging.


Both full-time onsite and Hybrid mobility classifications are acceptable for this role.


Hybrid – Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees should live within a reasonable commute to their designated Duke Energy facility #LI-PG1 #LI-Hybrid
