Overview

The Substation Engineering department is responsible for the engineering, design, and execution of transmission and distribution substation capital projects that support the safe, reliable, and cost-effective delivery of electric service. The department provides technical expertise and project leadership for new installations, expansions, upgrades, and asset replacement projects while supporting operational reliability, regulatory compliance, and long-term system performance.

Engineers in this department work closely with internal stakeholders, construction and operations personnel, field technicians, and external engineering consultants throughout the project lifecycle. Responsibilities include engineering design, project planning, cost estimating, budgeting, forecasting, accrual management, procurement, construction support, commissioning, and project closeout to support successful execution of the capital business plan. Engineers also provide technical support for the resolution of complex operational and reliability challenges affecting transmission and distribution substation assets.

The position will be filled at the appropriate level depending on the candidate's experience level: Engineer I, II, III, or Principal.

The position can be located in Louisville or Lexington, KY based on the candidate's preference.

Responsibilities
  • Performs engineering and design activities for transmission and distribution substations, including site development, civil and geotechnical engineering, structural and foundation design, equipment layouts, grounding systems, conduit and cable systems, protection and control systems, AC/DC systems, material specifications, environmental compliance, and safety requirements.
  • Assists in the execution of engineering projects and technical assignments using established engineering principles, procedures, and standards to develop safe, reliable, and cost-effective solutions.
  • Supports the full lifecycle of transmission and distribution substation projects, including planning, scope development, engineering design, cost estimating, budgeting, forecasting, accrual management, procurement, construction support, commissioning, project documentation, and project closeout. Monitors project scope, schedule, and financial performance to support successful execution of the capital business plan while coordinating with internal stakeholders, field personnel, operations, construction teams, and external engineering consultants.
  • Coordinates with internal stakeholders, operations personnel, construction teams, field technicians, and external engineering consultants to deliver capital, maintenance, reliability, and compliance initiatives.
  • Builds relationships that facilitate knowledge transfer, cross-functional collaboration, and effective communication of technical information and work products.
  • Gathers, analyzes, and applies engineering data to support design, troubleshooting, testing, maintenance, and operational activities.
  • Continually develops technical and business expertise through training, self-development, and collaboration with experienced engineering personnel.
  • Provides technical support for operational reliability, regulatory compliance, and NERC-related initiatives affecting transmission and distribution substation assets.
  • May be assigned an Electric Utilities emergency and storm restoration role, requiring work outside normal business hours during system emergencies.
  • Works in both office and field environments to develop engineering competencies through progressively challenging assignments.
  • All positions in which driving is an essential function of the job are considered safety sensitive regardless of job code designation.
