Job summary

Wyoming Department of Transportation in Lander, Wyoming seeks an Engineer I to develop, refine, and review highway construction plans, contributing to a safe and efficient transportation network for the state.

Working with limited supervision, you will apply engineering principles, perform design calculations, and use MicroStation and related software to prepare plans, estimates, and documentation while supporting ongoing projects and professional development.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Engineering required
• 0-2 years progressive engineering experience preferred
• Knowledge of calculus, geometry, algebra, and trigonometry

Responsibilities

• Develops, refines, and reviews horizontal and vertical alignments with minimal oversight
• Determines dimensions and geometry of roadway cross-sections for excavation, embankment and haul quantities
• Uses MicroStation and other software to design guardrails, culverts and drainage structures
• Follows State, Federal, and Agency design policies and procedures
• Calculates pay quantities for materials and prepares quantity summaries
• Attends workshops to increase skills and train others
• Issues intermediate plan sets and attends inspections

This position is based in Lander, Wyoming, a historic community that began as a military post known as Camp Augar and served as a key point for immigrants traveling through South Pass. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• With minimal oversight, develops, refines, and reviews horizontal and vertical alignments
• With minimal oversight, establishes the dimensions and geometry of roadway cross-sectional elements to determine and refine excavation, embankment, and haul quantities for roadway construction
• Uses Microstation and other software packages to design and detail other roadway features such as guardrail installations, culverts, storm sewer, drainage structures, utility, and right-of-way impacts
• Follows applicable State, Federal, and Agency design policies and procedures
• With minimal oversight, calculates pay quantities for the materials used to construct roadways and prepares spreadsheets summarizing these quantities
• Attends periodic workshops to increase skills and knowledge and train others in new methods and procedures
• With minimal oversight, issues intermediate plan sets and attends inspections

KNOWLEDGE

• Knowledge of calculus, geometry, algebra, and trigonometry
• Knowledge of highway engineering concepts and principles
• Knowledge of the WYDOT project/plan development procedures and project flow charts
• Skill in technical writing
• Skill in communication and time management
• Skill in the use of computer applications for office automation
• Ability to write reports and specifications
• Ability to produce engineering plans and develop cost estimates in a timely manner

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Bachelor's Degree (in Engineering)

Experience: 0-2 years of progressive work experience (in Engineering)

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

Some agencies may require a certificate of registration from the Board of Engineering.

  • If the employee elects to downgrade through an active recruitment and/or appointment during the twelve (12) month period, they would be required to pay the bonus back.
