Job summary

Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) is seeking an Electrical/Mechanical Engineer to prepare technical specifications, participate in design reviews, and inspect major rail vehicles and equipment. The role involves reviewing drawings, coordinating testing, and addressing technical issues to support maintenance and safety objectives.

Responsibilities include testing, warranty evaluations, reporting, and collaboration with regulators, vendors, and internal teams while upholding MBTA

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering from an accredited institution.
• 0–3 years of engineering experience.
• Ability to analyze electrical circuits, parameters, components, and failure mechanisms.
• Knowledge of electrical and/or mechanical components and their interaction with rail transit vehicles, systems, and equipment.
• Knowledge of real-time networks, including network communication theory, testing, design, and applications.
• Ability to understand electrical, operational, and mechanical characteristics of rail transit vehicles and related systems.
• Effective organizational, analytical, time management, problem-solving, and multi-tasking skills.
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, mainframe systems, and/or database applications.
• Ability to communicate effectively with regulatory agencies, community organizations, vendors, internal departments, and other stakeholders on technical and sensitive matters.
• Excellent customer service, communication, and conflict-resolution skills.
• Three (3) years or more of engineering experience.
• Experience working with transit vehicles, vehicle systems, fleet equipment, or related transportation systems.
• Experience with network-control, vehicle-communication, diagnostic, or real-time monitoring systems.
• Experience using computer-aided design (CAD) software.

Responsibilities

• Prepare technical specifications for vehicles, systems, components, equipment, and related maintenance activities.
• Participate in design reviews, technical meetings, inspections, project reviews, and other engineering evaluations.
• Inspect major systems, components, vehicles, and equipment at vendor, manufacturer, car builder, or MBTA facilities.
• Review engineering drawings, manuals, test procedures, technical documentation, specifications, and proposed modifications.
• Participate in testing, inspection, troubleshooting, commissioning, and acceptance of vehicles, systems, components, and equipment.
• Assist with planning and coordinating testing, inspections, warranty reviews, technical evaluations, and related project activities.
• Investigate and assist in resolving technical issues, defects, failures, and operational concerns.
• Conduct failure analyses of systems, components, vehicles, and equipment, and document findings and recommended corrective actions.
• Perform warranty evaluations and prepare supporting analyses, findings, and documentation.
• Prepare technical reports, summaries, findings, recommendations, correspondence, and other documentation as required.
• Remain current with MBTA Safety Management System Plan and fulfill all safety responsibilities.
• Drive MBTA or personal vehicle to inspect work sites, vendor locations, facilities, vehicles, systems, and equipment.
• Support investigations involving derailments, major system failures, emergencies, safety events, and other incidents affecting revenue service.
• Respond to inquiries from customers, vendors, contractors, coworkers, and other stakeholders professionally.
• Adhere to Authority rules, regulations, policies, procedures, and applicable collective bargaining agreements.
• Protect MBTA rights and interests while maintaining relationships with employees, vendors, contractors, and stakeholders.
• Staff Operations Control Center Vehicle Maintenance desk providing technical support, coordination, communication, and incident response.
• Perform all other duties and projects as assigned.
