Job description

Engineer Diver / Bridge Team Leader – Junior Level (Baton Rouge, LA)

Moffatt & Nichol specializes in large complex waterfront infrastructure projects and is recognized as one of the worldwide leaders in this field. We are actively seeking an Engineer with commercial diving and bridge inspection Team Leader certification and experience to perform structural inspections both above and below water. The successful new hire will be seated in our Baton Rouge (preferred) or New Orleans, LA office. You will be working with a professional engineering inspection team that provides consulting services to clients primarily in the Gulf region. As a member of the Inspection & Rehabilitation (I&R) Practice, occasional travel to waterfront destinations (both domestically and internationally) can be expected.

The principal function of this position is to perform assessments and investigations of marine and bridge structures through above and below water field operations, follow-on report preparation with repair recommendations, cost estimates, and development of structural repair designs. You will utilize modern workflows that include field tablets, UAS (drones), nondestructive testing and evaluation, marine mapping and imaging, analysis and modeling tools. We perform these inspections for federal agencies, states (department of transportation), municipalities, private clients, ports and marine terminal operators, marinas, wind and energy facilities and many more!

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Performs site investigations of marine structures, bridges, and other infrastructure assets.
  • Ensures that the scope of work is fulfilled as directed and that the contracted deliverable is submitted out on schedule and as budgeted.
  • Data entry/manipulation and technical writing skills for the preparation and review of inspection reports, proposals, etc.
  • Analyzes deteriorated components of marine and bridge structures to assess load capacity.
  • Prepares plans, specifications, cost estimates and supporting documentation.
  • Provides quality assurance reviews of inspection reports.
  • Works collaboratively with all members of the inspection team and of other engineering disciplines.
  • Assists with civil and structural design.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an accredited university.
  • Certified Commercial Diver is required; ADCI, HSE, DCBC, IMCA, ADAS or completion of a US military equivalent diving school.
  • 1 to 5 years of related diving and inspection experience and a minimum of 2 years of related bridge inspection experience.
  • Valid driver’s license in good standing with the ability to obtain a Class D driver's license.
  • Boater Safety Card preferred.
  • Availability and willingness to travel as required. Most work is local/regional and employee is able to return home most evenings. When travel outside of Louisiana is required, it is typically less than 2 weeks in duration.
  • Possession of or eligibility to obtain a Transportation Workers Identification Credential (TWIC).
  • Possess DBIDS card or eligibility to successfully pass background check to secure Department of Defense DBIDS card and other badges required by clients preferred.
  • Current First Aid, CPR, AED, and Oxygen Administration certification preferred.
  • Selected candidate must consent to and pass a post-offer/pre-employment drug screening.
  • All new hires will be required to successfully complete and pass a pre-employment (post offer) background check in compliance with NIST 800-171.

Working conditions:

The incumbent works in both the office and field:

  • Field work requires diving in waters and exposure to extreme elements.
  • Must be able to move among a variety of simultaneous priorities.
  • Some extended days, evenings, and weekend work requirements.

Physical requirements:

This role requires the incumbent to be in excellent physical condition:

  • Commercial diving requires specific physical conditioning and strength.
  • Field work requires incumbent to carry heavy equipment over unpaved, rural, and unmarked terrain.
  • The incumbent must be able to lift, carry, climb, and navigate in a small boat.

Compensation note:

In addition to salary, Moffatt & Nichol also offers generous rope access and dive pay along with a personal equipment reimbursement program.
