Job Summary

The Controls Engineer has expertise to solve problems, develop and execute objectives for themselves and others and to serve as a leader and mentor to Automation Technicians and Maintenance Technicians. This role has the ability to effect short‑term and some long‑term business goals and is an integral part of our plant.

Job Title

Controls Engineer

Responsibilities
  • Maintain and troubleshoot industrial automation systems, including but not limited to Siemens and ABB PLCs, HMIs, SCADA systems (PLC messaging, middleware, and SQL), vision/barcode systems, and Fanuc robotic applications.
  • Modify and test manufacturing methods and equipment; confer with equipment vendors.
  • Maintain and troubleshoot various types of automation instrumentation and devices such as servo drives, variable frequency drives, barcode readers, and I/O; develop manufacturing control systems by studying product requirements: researching, designing, testing/validating, and implementing projects of varying scale and scope.
  • Troubleshoot media and communications issues on Ethernet/IP, DeviceNet, ProfiNet, and other communication protocols.
  • Coordinate and implement automation changes for manufacturing on new products.
  • Collaborate with maintenance personnel to troubleshoot equipment, identify root cause, and implement corrective actions.
  • Provide technical support and mentoring to maintenance, manufacturing engineering, and production personnel as required.
  • Design and develop control systems for process, utilities, and safety‑related equipment.
  • Develop the GFL control systems standards.
  • Ensure product and company reputation by complying with government regulations.
  • Maintain equipment operational by coordinating maintenance and repair services; follow manufacturer instructions and established procedures; request special service when needed.
  • Maintain product and process data by writing computer programs and entering data.
  • Complete design and development projects by training and guiding technicians.
  • Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing publications, establishing personal networks, and participating in professional societies.
  • Contribute to the team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.
  • Adhere to IATF/TS16949 and applicable customer standards.
  • Perform other tasks and duties as assigned.
Academic/Educational Requirements
  • Bachelor’s Degree (or higher) in Engineering from an accredited institution.
  • Electrical, Systems, Manufacturing Engineering disciplines preferred, or equivalent expertise gained through professional experience, training, or certifications.
Required Skills/Experience
  • Minimum of two years’ experience in industrial control systems in a manufacturing environment.
  • Working knowledge of PLC and single‑loop controllers; preferably Siemens, ABB, GE Fanuc, CompactLogix, Mitsubishi, networking systems, ladder logic, structured text, functional block diagram, and SCADA systems (Ignition, etc.).
  • Knowledge of PLC/DCS configuration, design, and development and assessment of machine control standards.
  • Ability to evaluate existing building systems for increased operational demands.
  • Review equipment drawings to ensure proposed designs satisfy client requirements and comply with all applicable standards.
  • Determine appropriate materials and equipment for projects and decide on the appropriate codes and standards.
  • Contact suppliers to verify product availability, obtain specifications, and negotiate timely deliveries; interact with supervisors or managers for advice, direction, and updates.
