Newport News Shipbuilding, a division of HII, seeks an experienced engineer to plan, design, and oversee the construction of new or expanded facilities at our Newport News site.

This role requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET-accredited program and 9 years of relevant exempt experience (Master's 7 years; Ph.D. 4 years). You will manage design, cost estimates, contractor oversight, and ensure standards across projects.

The Role

Plans, designs and oversees the construction of new or expanded facilities. Prepares architectural, engineering, and cost estimates, functional studies, construction plans, specifications, and schedules. Obtains and supervises outside contractors. Recommends architectural and engineering design procedures and standards for the planning and design of facilities. Supervises the detailed design, budgetary costing, standardized construction, and final inspection of facility projects. Conducts construction surveillance to ensure adherence to contractual requirements. Provides engineering consulting services to local and divisional offices.

This position manages the design and construction of new or expanded facilities. Position reviews codes, calculations, drawings, specifications, constructability and material selection/substitutions to support assigned work. Position is responsible for performing contractor management, troubleshooting design or construction conflicts, provides technical solutions, performs project specific safety assessments/audits, quality control and quality inspection to design standards, preparations of startup and commissioning documents including checklists, operating procedure, and training for all assigned work. Conducts construction surveillance to ensure adherence to contractual requirements. Provides on-site resolution of engineering problems encountered during construction. Investigates problems incurred during testing and operations, restores problems and directs re-test to ensure the satisfactory performance of the system. Position also requires close coordination and management of multiple construction projects with multiple stakeholders, customers, maintenance and operations personnel. Position prepares project cost estimates and works with third parties to develop studies prior to design.

This position will support facilities in either the technical services, project management, or crane engineering team. The candidate shall have an applicable degree and three years of experience in an industrial environment. This position manages the design and construction of electrical, mechanical and structural work/systems associated with utility infrastructure, building and other industrial construction projects. Plans, designs and oversees the construction of new or expanded facilities. Prepares architectural, engineering, and cost estimates, functional studies, construction plans, specifications, and schedules. Obtains and supervises outside contractors. Recommends architectural and engineering design procedures and standards for the planning and design of facilities. Supervises the detailed design, budgetary costing, standardized construction, and final inspection of facility projects. Conducts construction surveillance to ensure adherence to contractual requirements. Provides engineering consulting services to local and divisional offices. Work is reviewed for soundness of technical judgment, overall adequacy and accuracy. Works under general supervision.

Must Have

Bachelor's Degree and 9 years of relevant exempt experience; Master?s Degree and 7 years of relevant professional experience; Ph.D. and 4 years of experience.

Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.

The following relevant Bachelor degrees may be used in lieu of an ABET Engineering Degree: Construction Engineering, Project Management, Construction Management or relevant Construction degree.
