Job summary

Bayer CropScience Limited in Muscatine, IA invites an Engineering Co-Op to apply engineering and safety principles in a chemical manufacturing environment, collaborating with engineers to improve processes, reliability, and efficiency across the site.

You will support design, installation, and startup of control systems, assist with cost analyses, procurement, and project planning, and present major findings at the assignment end.

Qualifications

  • Current enrollment in a Bachelor's or Master's degree program in Chemical, Mechanical, Electrical Engineering, or related.
  • Completed sophomore year or higher and plan to return to school after internship.
  • Ability to commute daily to Muscatine, IA.
  • Willingness to work in a chemical manufacturing environment.
  • Available to work 40 hours per week and capable of climbing stairs and ladders.

Responsibilities

  • Work with engineers to improve chemical processes, including yield and capacity improvements, waste reduction, cycle time reduction, and cost improvements.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical equipment and support reliability and cost improvements.
  • Assist with design, installation, and startup of automatic process controls and DCS.
  • Assist with project objectives by analyzing requirements and preparing sketches, drawings, or specifications.

Engineer Co-Op

In this role, you will apply engineering and safety principles in a chemical manufacturing environment, contributing your engineering knowledge to projects within the facility. You will work closely with engineers and staff to improve processes, support reliability and maintenance efforts, and help drive cost, safety, and efficiency improvements across the site.

YOUR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Work with and learn from Engineers and Staff to improve chemical processes, including yield and process capacity improvements, waste reduction, cycle time reduction, cost improvements, and modification/design of equipment;
  • Troubleshoot and provide recommendations for mechanical equipment, improving the reliability and cost associated with process area mechanical equipment;
  • Support the design, installation, and start- up of automatic process control, material handling, and distributed control systems;
  • Assist engineers in development of project objectives and scope by analyzing customer requirements and producing sketches, drawings, written descriptions, or specifications for customer approval;
  • Ensure compliance with engineering standards, engineering procedures, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) standards, site safety standards, pressure safety design, and environmental standards on all projects;
  • Gain insight into maintenance and reliability improvement programs for chemical plants;
  • Perform and check engineering calculations following standard methods and principles for projects;
  • Assist with the procurement process, including equipment specifications, bid evaluation, and contract administration;
  • Assist with conducting engineering cost, feasibility, and planning studies by analyzing customer needs and data, researching and investigating actions, coordinating with other engineers, and providing recommendations to the customer;
  • Collaborate with production and technical staff on day-to-day activities such as process troubleshooting and problem solving;
  • Work with all areas of operations and compliance organizations to drive attainment of project goals;
  • Support process improvement and Lean Manufacturing initiatives site-wide;
  • Present major project findings or updates in an oral or written report-style presentation at the end of the assignment.

WHO YOU ARE

Bayer seeks an incumbent who possesses the following:

Required Qualifications
  • Current enrollment in a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree program in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related Engineering discipline;
  • Successfully completed sophomore year or higher and returning to school upon completion of the intern assignment;
  • Ability to commute daily to and from the work location in Muscatine, IA;
  • Willingness to work in a chemical manufacturing environment;
  • Ability to work 40 hours per week and physically willing and able to climb stairs and ladders.
Desired Qualifications
  • Proficient in MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

Employees can expect to be paid a salary of approximately between $24.00 to $45.50. Additional compensation may include a bonus or commission (if relevant). This salary (or salary range) is merely an estimate and may vary based on an applicant’s location, market data/ranges, an applicant’s skills and prior relevant experience, certain degrees and certifications, and other relevant factors.
