Job summary

CoVolt Power is seeking an Engineer I - Battery Storage in Houston, TX or remotely from Chattanooga, TN. The role focuses on sizing LV/MV equipment, developing site layouts, translating RFPs into designs, and setting up safe, profitable execution for utility-scale BESS projects.

You will work with cross-functional teams to shape project strategies, drive innovative solutions, and support preconstruction, procurement, and handover activities across North America.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering, electrical engineering, architecture, construction management, business, or related field.
  • Strong understanding of battery storage technology including augmentation strategies, technical terms, and safety/clearance requirements.
  • Solid knowledge of batteries, coupling strategies, PCS, DCDC converters, relevant codes and standards.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with Business Development, Engineering, Scheduling, Estimating, and Operations to align project needs and create competitive cost and technical strategies.
  • Review RFP documents to confirm scope, design criteria, and create specifications and layouts for required site equipment; identify risks and clarify exceptions.
  • Size and verify sizing of client-provided equipment to ensure codes and standards are met.
  • Support RFP deliverables development and deadlines with emphasis on quality, safety, and clarity.
  • Maintain and support a battery storage database of system requirements and related docs.
  • Explore value engineering opportunities for project savings and customer outcomes.
  • Advocate for customer goals in pursuit planning and decisions.
  • Verify technical elements during LNTP/EPC negotiations and risk reviews.
  • Assist with timely execution of PSAs, POs, and subcontractor agreements.
  • Promote continual planning and collaboration to provide optimal execution plans.

About the Role

We're looking for an ambitious Engineer I - Battery Storage who is ready to grow into a future leader. In this role, you'll play a critical part in shaping utility-scale BESS projects by combining technical expertise with collaboration and team empowerment. You'll work closely with cross-functional teams, influence project strategies and design, and drive innovative solutions that advance renewable energy.

This position serves as the technical resource for sizing LV/MV equipment, developing site layouts and clearances based on technology selections, translating client RFP requirements into site designs, execution strategy, constructability alignments, drafting scope documents for subcontracts, and setting the project up for safe, profitable, and effective execution.

Key Responsibilities
Bid & Pursuit
  • Collaborate with Business Development, Engineering, Scheduling, Estimating, and Operations to align project needs and create competitive cost and technical strategies.
  • Review RFP documents to confirm scope, design criteria, and create specifications and layouts for required site equipment; identify risks and recommend clarifications, exclusions, determine equipment and material quantities, and negotiation points.
  • Size and/or verify sizing of Client provided equipment/designs to ensure codes, standards, and local regulations are adhered to.
  • Support RFP deliverables development and deadlines, ensuring technical aspects of proposals meet client requirements and reflect our commitment to quality, safety, and clarity.
  • Maintain and support battery storage database of system requirements which may include but is not limited to installation manuals, specifications, datasheets, guidelines, CAD drawings, etc.
  • Explore and suggest value engineering opportunities for projects delivering savings strategies to our clients
  • Advocate for the customer, ensuring their goals and priorities are clearly understood and integrated into pursuit planning and decisions.
Pre-Award & Contracting
  • Verify technical elements of LNTP/EPC Agreement negotiations in partnership with Legal, Business Development, Executive Leadership, etc.
  • Support constructability and risk reviews, maintaining the proposal commercial, technical, and execution risk profiles during Owner contract negotiations.
  • Identify Owner contract deliverables; ensure LNTP activities are in accordance with contract terms, schedule milestones, scope, compliance, and budget.
  • Assist with timely execution of PSAs, POs, and subcontractor agreements in partnership with Procurement for project site equipment materials.
  • Promote continual planning and collaboration to provide Operations with the best possible execution plan, balancing technical and commercial priorities.
  • Leverage technology experience, overall BESS knowledge, and safety practices to enhance team productivity and project success.
Preconstruction Execution
  • Manage technical elements of preconstruction deliverables and ensure alignment with Owner requirements and project objectives.
  • Review and comment on designs received from Owner, internal resources, independent engineers, and EORs to ensure design is in compliance with BESS OEM provided documentation and applicable codes/regulations.
  • Support risk mitigation efforts and apply best practices to improve efficiency and profitability.
  • Maintain clear communication with internal teams and stakeholders to ensure readiness for construction handover.
Handover & Operations Support
  • Support formal handover of project ownership from Preconstruction to Operations, ensuring clarity and continuity.
  • Support Operations by providing context on design decisions, vendor and subcontractor selections, technologies, and contract terms.
  • Participate in internal project and risk reviews to capture lessons learned and apply insights to future proposals.
  • Collaborate with Business Development and Estimating on change order reviews from Award to FNTP.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering, electrical engineering, architecture, construction management, business, or related field
  • Strong understanding of battery storage technology including augmentation strategies, technical terms, chemistry, safety/clearance requirements, communication schemes, codes, auxiliary equipment, etc.
  • Solid knowledge of batteries, coupling strategies, PCSs, DCDC Converters, relevant codes and standards, risk management principles.
  • Experience in power plant EPC required; BESS EPC experience highly preferred
