Job description

Overview

The Substation Engineering department oversees the design and implementation of substation construction projects and supports the resolution of non-routine technical and operational reliability issues. Engineers in this department work with third-party engineering firms and internal field technicians to improve or expand the reliability and capability of the regional power delivery system at the interface between power transmission and distribution.

The position will be filled at the appropriate level depending on the candidate's experience: Engineer I, II, III, or Principal.

The role can be located in Louisville or Lexington, KY, based on the candidate’s preference.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in smaller engineering projects or well-defined areas of larger projects, using existing procedures to investigate, evaluate, and produce technically correct and cost-effective designs or recommendations.
  • Build relationships facilitating knowledge transfer and cross-functional collaboration, and present work products effectively.
  • Work under supervision in the field and/or home office in various functions, developing competencies in the discipline.
  • Gather and analyze engineering data using defined procedures, including routine testing of components and systems.
  • Expand and improve technical and business skills proactively with guidance from supervisors.
  • Assist in developing innovative procedures, improved design recommendations, or new equipment purchases.
  • Participate in safety-sensitive roles, including driving and emergency storm response, which may require after-hours work.
  • Work on-site, remotely, or in a hybrid capacity as determined by the company, with possible location changes.
  • Design substations covering site, civil, geotechnical, general arrangement, foundation, equipment, grounding, conduit and cable, protection & control systems, and electrical distribution systems.
  • Develop schedules, drawings, bid specifications, and project documentation for new installations and upgrades.
  • Provide project and technical support to ensure compliance with NERC standards, especially in transmission protection and substations.

Required Education

ABET-accredited Bachelor's degree in Engineering or engineering technology is required.
