Job summary

Pike Engineering seeks a senior engineer to lead protection and control design for substation and transmission projects, delivering safe and cost-effective engineering services. You will supervise junior staff, manage budgets, and support proposals, while coordinating with clients and other design disciplines.

Requirements include 5–7 years of engineering experience, ABET/EAC accredited degree, and PE licensure within a year. This is a hands-on, leadership role within a dynamic team.

Qualifications

• 5 to 7 years’ experience as a practicing engineer.
• Bachelor’s degree from an EAC/ABET accredited Engineering Program OR evaluation by NCEES OR advanced degree in engineering.
• Licensed Professional Engineer or ability to be licensed within one year.

Job description

Position Overview

Provide substation protection and control design, engineering, technical support, and oversight to a transmission substation engineering and design team for the purpose of delivering safe, cost-effective, and quality engineering and design services. Provide technical competency and direction on complex engineering and technical problems for projects including a wide range of utility substation projects, battery energy storage systems and solar collector substations. The incumbent is expected to lead discipline work for projects, perform responsible charge engineering duties, and manage project schedules and budgets. The incumbent will also support proposal development and project cost estimating.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Advanced understanding of protection and control fundamentals as they apply to utility substation and transmission line equipment
• Proficient in design of protection schemes for substation and transmission line equipment, including bus, line, capacitor and transformer design and protection schemes and associated settings
• Advanced understanding of SCADA communication design
• Ability to lead a team of engineers and designers in a lead engineer capacity
• Proficient in principles of project management
• Basic understanding of substation design to include equipment arrangements
• Create substation P&C design project scopes, estimates, budgets, and schedules for substation projects
• Ability to read, interpret, design, and engineer P&C designs for utility stations through 500kV, including one lines, three lines, AC/DC schematics, panel layouts, wiring diagrams, settings, relays, and SCADA
• Ability to perform studies and create reports for coordination, voltage drop, fault current, and insulation coordination
• Perform calculations and studies using client specified software and standards
• Oversee the work of junior staff and mentor designers/drafters
• Experience checking designs for accuracy, appearance, and adherence to customer standards
• Collaborate, communicate, and liaise effectively with other design disciplines, colleagues, construction contractors, consultants, materials suppliers, and clients
• Visit sites, advise on P&C engineering issues, and modify design to solve issues during construction
• Manage budgets and project schedules

Requirements

• 5 to 7 years’ experience as a practicing engineer
• Bachelor’s degree from an EAC/ABET accredited Engineering ProgramORan approved evaluation of non-ABET credentials by NCEESORgraduation from a Master’s or Doctoral Program in Engineering from an institution with EAC/ABET accredited Undergraduate Engineering Programs
• Licensed Professional Engineer or the ability to be licenses within one year
